Chronic sinusitis due to allergies - Time to consider sinus surgery?

Unfortunately, like many of you reading this, I have severe allergies. The list includes most pollens (weed/grass & tree), dust, dust mites and mold.

Currently, I'm taking Allegra, Nasal Quart, Advair & Xoliar. Now I still regularly get sinus pain, but it's mild to moderate. Basically, this stuff helps, but is far from a cure all.

I've also tried the Grossen (sp?) nasal irrigation but it didn't do a thing to help.

My insurance is no longer covering the Xoliar and I'm not going to fork over the $1,000 (yes that's three zeros) per month.

Anyway, can I extrapolate anything from the fact that the nasal irrigation is ineffective? Does this mean I have a blocked sinus cavity? And if so, will sinus surgery (at least in theory) unblock this passage and allow me to effectively use nasal irrigation to eliminate sinus pain?

I'm going to arrange for a CT scan in the near future, but I'm just looking for some insight at the moment. There seems to be a lot of info on sinus surgery, but not a lot on whether it's part of a long term solution if Allergies are causing the chronic sinusitis.

Unless there is some malformation or blockage of the sinuses there would be no point in surgery. Have you tried allergy shots? What about a decongestant?

For me, after everything else was tried, sinus surgery was my saving grace. I suffered through 9 months (!) of sinusitis that no irrigation or meds could touch. When finally I went to ENT and they said the CT indicated a need for surgery I was so desperate that I wanted it to be done THAT DAY.

For certain you should try everything else first. But for me, surgery was the answer.

Yes, that's what I'm wondering. Since nasal irrigation doesn't work I'm thinking that could indicate a blockage.....

I haven't tried allergy shots. At the time Xoliar was recommended to me as a better solution.

If you don't mind my asking, was the sinusitis due to allergies?

BTW thanks to both of you for the replies!

Yes, they were due to allergies. And I have been on the allergy shots, too- they take a while to start making a difference.

Sinus surgery was my saving grace too. For me, I felt like a million bucks afterward, but to this day, I still have to continue my allergy meds and my shots. But I was a wreck before surgery.

Irrigation before surgery always cleared my nose, but not my head KWIM? Irrigation has been much more effective since surgery.

I'm so impressed your doctor gave you Xolair. I've heard nothing but great things about it for allergies. Unfortunately it is only approved for severe asthmatics. I really pray they someday approve it for severe allergies. There is research showing normal allergy shots are more effective when given with Xolair.

    Thanks for that info Sneezy!

It was a pulmonary specialist who put me onto the Xolair to treat my sports induced asthma. Apparently, my asthma was caused by allergies. It helped with the the asthma (Mountain Biking is my life, and I live in Colorado, so I need all the help I can get with that one! ). As I said, it also helped my sinuses, but I still got pain every now and then.

Having to self inject it every month took a bit of getting used too. Anyway, I'm going to appeal my health care providers decision on the Xolair FWIW. Fingers crossed on that one...
