Hello Essica....Sorry to hear about your troubles. The ears, nose, and sinuses are all connected via the same plumbing, thus, those with allergies or sinus problems can develop related issues. I would see a Doctor if you are concerned. I can't say whether TMJ is a factor or not. Sounds like your GP isn't convinced either. You may need to see your ENT, who would be best qualified to determine.

Good luck, and I'm sorry to hear about your most recent issues. When/if you see your ENT, talk to him about whether or not a daily regimen of decongestants and antihistimines would work. They don't necessarily need to be Rx...Most are available OTC and work very well. The decongestants I take help "open me up" and control congestion. The antihistimines keep my nose from running a whole lot....This keeps my sinuses clearer and less likely for an infection to develop. Also, a "runny nose" can often result in a cough due to the trickle down the back of the throat.

Take care. Hang in there as best you can.

    Thanks

I went to my GP this morning and he had a look in my ears, said left was slightly congested, right was fine. He said no treatment was needed. Was rather blunt and said my scan was practicaly clear, only slight congestion and he said most of us have mild sinus disease so to stop worrying about complications as they just will not happen. He was blunt but right I guess.

Glad to hear everything is ok. I know you will rest easier. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not familiar with health insurance & etc. in the UK....Can you go straight to a specialist, like an ENT or do you have to be referred? Nothing against your GP as I'm sure he's good, but given your history of ENT issues and the severity, I think I would find a way to head straight to the ENT when issues arise.

GPs are very good at handling one's overall medical situation, especially the first level of care (for any given situation or condition). However, once a person develops a known repetitive issue, I'm not so sure I wouldn't let the specialist handle it from there. Just my .02. However, your health insurance protocol may prevent that as I'm not sure. Here in the U.S., I can go straight to the ENT...The only difference is that I have to pay a "specialist" co-pay vs a regular GP co-pay.

Take care, and glad to hear all is ok.

    Regards,

    Hiya Ex,

You get a referal to start with then you can go back to ENT consultant whenever as I am paying private not on the NHS.

THe ENT consultant told me to wait until December to see how I felt, he said if I wanted he could re scan me then but he said its probably something I will have to live with.

The GP today just said my right ear was clear and the left was a tiny bit congested, is that infection??? he said I didn't require treatment at all.

    Thanks for your help.

Congestion is just that...Congestion, not necessarily "infected." For example, due to my bad allergies, I have congestion all the time...My nose runs & etc. However, it is clear in color. If I get too much congestion and get too stuffy, and I can't get it out, I tend to develop an infection. All the congestion just sitting there is a perfect environment for an infection to start, or bacteria to grow. Just because you have congestion doesn't mean it's an infection.

Take care, and I'm glad all is ok with you.

    HI Ex,

    Ahhh I understand.

On my CT scan the ENT said it was congestion and as my nose runs clear and anything I cough up is clear he said it didn't need antibiotics. The GP today said therefore I am not at any risk. He said if I developed an infection ie green gunk and a temperature he wouldn't necessarily treat it with antibiotics to start with as he said they are not always affective with sinusitis so he said I should be reassured that the complications are very rare because he wouldn't leave me to get ill if there was a risk of me becoming very ill.

He said my congestion must be running out otherwise id feel very ill by now.

    Ex,

Do you have blocked ears and sinus type issues every day?

I woke up this morning, left ear felt very clogged again I took my nasonex, did irrigation and blew out a ball (sorry tmi) of clear thick mucus when I blew my nose. Since then the pressure in my cheek has gone but left ear still feels clogged.

I have a clogged ear most days, usually it jumps sides but lately its just my left and some sinus type pain which comes & goes. Is it ok to live with this every day??? my GP says most people do but don't notice it.

Re: I feel worse not better, chronic sinusitis:-(

Hello Essica....I don't have much trouble with my ears, but do sinuses. They are blocked, swollen, and have drainage every day. I have more issues with "pressure" than drainage. The decongestants I take help with the pressure aspect.

It was probably good that you blew that stuff out....As we've discussed, when it sits around in there, it's a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Try to remember my puddle example...The longer a puddle hangs around, the more likely bacteria will grow in it.

With all due respect, I hear what your GP says about "most people", but I don't think he quite understands the magnitude of your issue. What you describe in detail is very close to what I experience. Although most people may have some sinus issue(s), I don't think they have it to the extent that you're describing. That's why I said I would stay in close contact with your ENT....He "gets it." He is also more than capable of prescribing whatever meds you may need in terms of maintenance. I'm not sure I agree with the "don't need antibiotics for an infection" statement, but he's the Doc. Just another reason to see the ENT if you ask me. I go straight to my ENT whenever I have issues. I've had surgery too, so that makes it that much more important (for me)

I can't stress enough how important it is to have a "rescue area"...i.e. bedroom. It is where you spend the most hours of your day, therefore, it should be very clean and allergy friendly...For example, Hardwood or tile is better than carpet, clean the room often, try to keep the dust down, and most of all, no open windows if possible...Use the air conditioner.

I have most of my sinus issues in the AM after awakening...This is when I take my daily regimen of decongestants and antihistimines. I also take OTC pain meds for the general soreness and pressure. Motrin works good for me. After a couple of hours, I usually feel better. I also feel worse when it rains (molds and moisture) and after it's been windy (gets everything stirred up).

Take care, and I hope all improves for you.

    Regards,

    Ex

    Thanks Ex,

I shall see my ENT if things do not improve in a month or 2, he said he would re scan me if need be.

He said an op wasn't necessary if I wasn't experiencing lots of infections so I shall see how things go, it just worries me alot

Re: I feel worse not better, chronic sinusitis:-(

Its me again 'oh no' I hear you cry

Today my left ear still feels clogged up as does my left cheek, doesn't hurt to touch just alot of pressure Would i really be blocked up and have a fever if I had an infection? I always get extra worried at the weekend because our GP is then shut.

I spoke to my ENT again and he said that he will send me the scan report and he also said that if I had an infection the CT result would of shown all the sinuses grey all up to the top, mine were just a thin layer, is that what they would show like then? I know I should trust him. He also said if I am not hot and not got green mucus to not worry at all.

I am in such a dilema. I have 3 children and I really want a 4th but since I was diagnosed with this I am worried sick about trying because I am worrying about the 'what if's' all of the time with this sinus issue and I do not want it to worry me and make my pregnancy a crappy time. Do you think I would be stupid to let this stop me??

I spoke to ENT and he said it should not stop me at all as I just need to learn to live with this condition as its something I will always have to battle with as its more than likely allergy related so why won't it go if I am doing all I can to avoid and treat it???

    Any advice appreciated

Re: I feel worse not better, chronic sinusitis:-(

Hello....I think your ENT has given you some excellent advice. Yes, sinus problems aren't any fun, but unfortunately, we have to deal with them. I would not let it stop me from having children. The only preclusion would be if I were taking lots of meds or some type of med that could effect the pregnancy. But that would be up to your OBGYN, given whatever the med was.

I would talk to the Doc about decongestants to help with the pressure. They can be OTC or in Rx form. The only difference between the two is that the Rx form is a little stronger and most often less expensive because all you have is your co-pay and you get a months worth. Antihistimines would help with the runny nose part of a person's symptoms.

I would not worry or be the least bit bothered unless I started to have yellowish, greenish crud. That is the initial signs of an infection. As we discussed before, you may or may not get a fever. Even if you were to get an infection over the weekend, waiting a couple of days wouldn't hurt things....You'd just be a bit uncomfortable.

Is "Singulair" available in your area? It's been a wonder drug for me as it prevents a lot of allergy issues. In the U.S, it's by Rx only, but in some countries, you don't need an Rx. It's so safe that it's even available for children. Do you take any regimen of meds to help with your allergy symptoms?

Take care, and I hope you start to feel better.

    Regards,

    Ex

Re: I feel worse not better, chronic sinusitis:-(

    Hiya,

I was told by my GP not to take sudafed (decongestant) as it can make the problem worse? so I just use my nasal spray. I have tried loritidine for a period of time but it made no difference. I do irrigation twice daily.

The GP did say my face would hurt to touch which it doesn't and he said if I had an infection that was left I would get a fever and lots of green.

I don't really have much coming from my nose, would i have some kind of mucus if i had an infection? my nose doesn't really run?? I Just feel stuffed up in my ear and cheek,s ometimes my nostril might feel a tad stuffy on that side but that comes and goes, I can breath pretty well.

I am only 29 and this gets me down being like this, I also have 3 young children to take care of plus im a worrier so I am not finding it easy

My son is asthmatic and takes singulair, its a small tablet he takes at night before bed. I get asthma symptoms occasionally, itchy chin and tight chest but it soon passes, not sure what flares it up? last year i had bronchitis and had a cough for 3 months, I was told i might have ashtma but after a few tests it was only borderline.

    Thanks again for your advice.

    Essica...

how are you doing on eliminating Wheat from your diet? Keep a serious journal on everything that you eat and drink. I was told to watch my wheat but haven't made a serious attempt yet.

This past weekend i was at a campout with food that had wheat in about everything. My face was all swelled up monday morning. I'm convinced that it is playing a part in my sinus issues. I'm trying to track and at least cut back. I tend to over do on cookies some times. At least now i have something to go on. At least you had a reaction to the allergy test, i did not. My naturapath/chiro tested me against some foods with my sinuses. I bought some rice bread but haven't tried it yet. The healthfood store had many wheat/gluten free breads but they were frozen and i was only on my lunch hour.

Please try this. This is within your power to control. Are you on other medications (bp or heart) that a decongestant tablet would have interactions? If you are not on other meds, I would try the decongestant, sudafed 12 hr. I get up with my dogs around 4am, take my sudafed and by the time i have to get up my head is fairly clear.
