Sinus or tooth pain?

I've had a lot of sinus congestion and problems this winter. On Sunday, I woke up with the typical congestion, post nasal drip, etc, etc. As the day went on, it seemed like the sinus pain was localized on one side of my face, down low by my teeth. If any of you have had teeth pain as a result of sinus congestion or sinusitis, you know what I mean.

This pain has continued, but now I am starting to wonder if it might be a tooth issue and not a sinus issue. I don't have sinus pain or congestion anywhere else, and it is immediately above a tooth that has a rather large filling in it.

Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Thanks. I just posted this over on the ear nose and throat board as well.

Hi, Colinette . . . I have had five upper molars and one upper bicuspid over the last several years that were abscessed, and were the actual cause of my what I thought were sinus infections. Due to my age and periodontitis, I had to have them all extracted but noticed immediate improvement after they were gone.

If it sometimes localizes to just the tooth, you should get into a dentist for a check-up and an x-ray. If you have a filling that is going out, you may need to have it replaced but if the tooth is abscessed, you may need to have it extracted or a root canal done.

Best of luck to you and let us know what you find out!

Thanks for your response. I've never had an abscessed tooth before, but I'm worried this filling might be cracked or old -- or both. The pain is much worse in the morning, almost gone in the afternoon. I already have my annual dentist check up on Thursday of this week, so I'll find out then.

I just hope that this is NOT an infection from my tooth -- I would rather not have to deal with that! I watched my father suffer through abscessed teeth and I know how hard that can be. I'm sorry you've had to deal with that also.

Re: Sinus or tooth pain?

I think it was all sinus. On Wednesday, the pain had spread up to my eye, and to even touch my face on my cheek was painful. I spent the entire morning blowing a bunch of stuff out of those sinuses. By Thursday morning, the pain was all gone. I had my six month check up at the dentist that day, and they told me if it were tooth pain, it would get worse, not better.

So this was just one more round of sinus congestion for me!

Glad to hear it was not a tooth!

Stay well!
