My colds always turn into sinusitis
Everytime I get a cold, sinusitis always seems to follow. This has happened for years. I am on the pill now though so antibiotics are a complete pain.

I have two questions:

a) Is there anyway I can prevent my cold from turning into sinusitis?

b) Is it possible for sinusitis to disappear without antibiotics and is this harmful?

first, be aware that antibiotics do not render the pill inactive, so you don't have to worry about that. There is a "possibility" it can reduce it's effectiveness, so it's best to use a backup just in case.

Second.. have you seen an ENT? If your colds are always turning into a sinus infection you may want to get a CT to see if there are any structural problems causing it. A lot of times when one keeps getting infections it's because there is a blockage somewhere and the mucus and bacteria get trapped causing an infection.
Also, have you tried sinus irrigation such as the neti pot? Something to definitely think about. I rinse my sinuses once or twice a day but I would recommend it definitely while you are sick. It thins out the mucus and helps it drain, preventing it from getting "stuck" up there.

Re: My colds always turn into sinusitis
I should see an ENT specialist really.. I've had ENT problems my whole life. I had my tonsils out because they were just massive dead germ attractors, I have a problem with my ears where they feel blocked all the time but they are not waxy. And sinusitis. I have a feeling it could be to do with my jaw positioning - does that sound crazy? I have a very slight underbite so my jaw juts out a bit. Sometimes my jaw aches along with the sinus problems and the ear... anyway...

Forgive me but I have no idea what a neti pot is? Is it a nasal spray? I've been told nasal sprays don't really help and can make things worse but who knows.

Re: My colds always turn into sinusitis
the position of the jaw wouldn't cause any sinus problems, but the nerves are so intertwined that sinus pressure can cause your jaw to hurt, just as jaw problems can cause problems up the sides of your face.
Neti pot is just a brand of a sinus rinse system, there are others such as NeilMed SinusRinse. It's not a sinus medication spray. You can find these systems in any drug store or even Walmart in the sinus area. They use salt water and you actually "rinse" out this sinuses. This helps water down any mucus and cleans out any dirt/pollen, etc. It won't completely prevent sinus problems, but I find it helps immensely!

I'll have a look in my local chemist and supermarket! I'm from England you see, so we don't have a Walmart.

Thanks for the help! It's been useful.

Re: My colds always turn into sinusitis
I love my neti pot and recommend nasal irrigation all the time! No, itís not exactly killer party conversation but good habits w/ the sinuses can go a long way toward good health.
I am a huge believer in natural cures, and in not jumping to meds or surgery too quickly. However I must say that if things get to the ďchronicĒ stage donít mess around. See your doctor and then if you get a ct scan make sure you know all your options (it used to be that sinus surgery was the only option. but now there are less invasive choices like balloon sinuplasty).
Thatís my two cents. Take care and keep those nasal passages clean!

Re: My colds always turn into sinusitis
I have the same problem too. When I get a cold I almost know its going to turn into a darn sinus infection. I have been using the neti pot off and on for a couple of years now. It does help. But I still deal with the problem. A couple weeks ago I went through 2 rounds of z paks to clear one up. Now tonight my sinus's are just aching and throbbing. I don't know if it is because our weather has just turned very cold and damp or what. I do also think I have small sinus tubes so I don't think they drain real well. I think some of us are like that. I am trying to do everything natural too.
