Question sinus drainage affecting my lungs

I have chronic sinus drainage that began just a year ago. I coughed day and night and went to a dr. They listened to my lungs and I had xrays and it showed some spots but not cancer. I still am not clear what they were. Then they sent me to an ENT dr. He said I had gerd and my sinuses were being worsened by the gerd. Put me on heavy antibiotics and my coughing was relieved until I ran out of them. It is back now. My lungs are filling up too. I am wheezy when I breath and it is getting scary. I haven't had much luck with doctors. Just run test after test and it cost $$$$. Does anyone else have a problem like this? I am 65 and in very good health. Still working. I just need to know if someone else has had this problem or am I looking at a lung disorder instead of a sinus/gerd problem.

Hi karron.. first, if you were put on antibiotics and they saw spots on your lungs that probably means you have a lung infection. If it's getting worse get back to the doctor asap!
Second.. this DEFINITELY can be caused by gerd. I have had the same problems. I finally got diagnosed with it after it started giving me asthma and was affecting my voice. I can also tell that it sometimes gets up in my sinuses. What happens is the reflux goes into your lungs and in some cases up in your sinuses (this happens mostly at night when we are laying down) causing problems. I would get back with the doctor about the lung problem and also ask about getting your gerd in check. What you probably want to do is get referred to a gastroenterologist to be SURE that the diagnosis is correct and once you get it under control the lung issues should greatly improve or go away all together. good luck!

Re: sinus drainage affecting my lungs

Thank you so much for your reply. This gives me something to tell the dr when I go back to him. My lungs are getting worse and yes, you are right, it is much worse at night. I will ask to be referred to a gastroenterologist. I have gone back to the sinus irrigation. I had stopped because it doesn't seem to help. Do you think this is helpful in any way? It sounds like, from what you are saying, my main issue is gerd and not sinus. I am taking the otc medication prilosec and they told me to take 2 a day. But now I am back to square one after my antibiotics were finished with the wheezing lungs.
    Thank you for your help!

hey! when do you go back to your doc? You may want to call today to see if they want you back on more antibiotics. They may also recommend a steroid inhaler to help you breath (that's how I got through my lung infection that I had years ago!)
As for sinus rinsing, it certainly doesn't hurt. It probably won't do anything for your lung issue but at least it will keep any sinus drainage thinned out.
good luck and I hope you feel better!

I do not have a Dr appt yet, but your information was so helpful. I was thinking I was over reacting to this whole thing. I am calling the ENT specialist I went to and requesting a refill on that antibiotic he gave me and then I will schedule an appt. Thanks so much!
