Hi all Im new to the forum & desperately seeking help. I was diagnosed in 2007 by an ENT with chronic sinustius due to allergies (dustmites, pollen, cats etc) and have done the best I can to manage my allergies to avoid further sinus infections. I still do suffer with them though a few times a year.

I recently had an allergic flare up at work & have been off work now off and on for the past two months (tried to go back twice but was too unwell). My doctor is treating as acute/now chronic sinusitus - I have had 4 courses of antibiotics & Nasonex & 5 days of predisilone and if anything my symptoms have worsed, to the point where I have been crying in pain the last few days - severe head pressure/pain, ear pain and blocked feeling, pressure & pain in cheek & eye area which ive been taking Tramadol painkillers for, but are no longer helping me much. I have gone from having a few 'good' days - where I can manage the pain with some days where its worse, to in the last week having several days in a row with the pain being so intense I have been in bed most of the time, because getting up to do anything or focus on anything has been too difficult.

Today I saw my doctor & was given new painkillers and told to increase my prednisilone to 8 per day (40mg) which I will start from tommorow. Thankfully tonight the painkillers are taking the edge off for me, because prior to tonight it was getting so severe I was crying for hours. My doctor thinks no point in referring me to an ENT as already saw one a few years ago and was diagnosed with sinus problem due to allergies, he thinks its due to my allergies and the best is to keep trying things, hence upping the pred. I feel like Im banging my head against the wall!

Surely a CT should be re-done as the last was two years ago, and that would at least show if its infection? Is there not more that can be done, rather than send me on my way with more pills? Ive had plenty of sinus infections in the past & never have they worsened like this after 6 weeks. Im really at a loss as to what to do. Im due to see an allergy specialist in two weeks, but two weeks is a long time more to be like this. My doctor seems to think they will only do what he is doing treatment wise.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Im going out of my mind.

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
Sounds like you are not getting the best medical advice. If your current doctor is not able to help you, you should definitely see another doctor. If I were in the discomfort you are telling us about -- I would seek the best medical advice possible. It doesn't sound like your current doctor is interested in referring you to a specialist (ENT) or another doctor more capable of helping you. More pain medication is only covering up the problem -- not solving it -- you need a solution.
In the meantime, you might want to try some warm compresses on your sinuses. If the warm doesn't give you some relief, try using cool compresses.
Good luck.

Sounds like you need to be on allergy injections and sinus rinses. For him to keep on like this is ridiculous. There are tons of appropriate allergy treatments from sprays to pills to shots.

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
Thanks for your replies. I should have said, have done saline rinses (been using a neti-pot for a couple of years to keep my allergies under control) and have been heating up hot compresses to help with the pain. The new painkillers he gave me yesterday have taken the edge off the pain, but I still feel awful and blocked in my ears and face & theres still alot of pressure/headache. My doctor is a nice man and have been with him a few years, but as I have had chronic sinus problems a few years ago its almost like he thinks it will right itself eventually and theres no point seeing an ENT as will just said its sinusitus due to my allergies. I cant help but thinking it may be worth a shot though, takes so long on the national health service to get scans etc, so would find the money to pay if need be somehow. He doesnt seem to see the point, as thinks its due to my allergies, and steroid treatment is the way to go, but a scan may show something or at least rule things out maybe.

He rang me this morning at home to see how I was as I was so upset when saw him yesterday due to the pain. I told him the painkillers had taken the edge off and would continue with 8 a day steroids, see how I go, but if it hasnt eased by Monday im going to insist on a scan or seeing an ENT urgently because something has to be done. I dont understand why if its my allergies, why nothing is easing it, im on antihistimines daily & already use saline & avoid any allergens (had allergies for years so have dustmite proof bedding etc). Im even keeping a food diary, but theres no pattern in symptoms. All I know is I feel worse this past week then I did to begin with.

I wish I knew what the hell was going on. Im losing so much pay from my job, not to mention risking losing it due to my absence, and need to get well.

Any advice x

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
One thing to keep in the back of your mind -- doctors want sick people. People who feel well don't go to doctors. People who die don't go to doctors. Only people who do not feel well go to doctors. The sick are their income. Surely there has to be other doctors in your area who are more interested or capable of helping you. Many times doctors get so disinterested in treating others of what they consider to be minor issues. More pain pills are not really helping you -- only covering your symptoms with fog.
Good luck --- Hope you feel better soon.

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
i also have a sinus since i was young and as far as i know sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. A sinus infection can cause a headache or pressure in the eyes, nose, cheek area, or on one side of the head. A person with a sinus infection may also have a cough, a fever, bad breath, and nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions.. Sinus Infection treatment is possible with proper medications and sometime even a surgery like Functional Endoscopic Surgery or the Image Guided Surgery can solve the problem. However, there are various types of sinus natural cures like sinus pressure relief and sinus headache relief. These cures acts as sinus busters and provides relief from sinus congestion.

You absolutely need to see an ENT for an endoscopic exam (and probably a CT scan) right away. If I were you I wouldn't even wait until Monday. If you need a written referral from the doctor I would recommend you call today and insist on the referral. If you don't, I would find an ENT who treats chronic sinusitis and call and beg for an immediate appointment.

Your current doctor doesn't seem to be serving you very well and you're going to need to see an ENT to start getting to the bottom of what's going on.

Hi Sinuses1982,

I hope this will relieve you agony. You could be allergic to something in your environment or some kind of food. Yes I agree that you should change doctors. It would be good to get a good strain of probiotics. I too have sinus problems and it helps a lot when I take probiotics and leave certain foods out of my diet. Let me know how you are doing.

I had been taking all kind of diff medications for allergy and none have cured me yet. So today I start taking sinuswars #1, #2 and #13 at the moment. Will let you know in a week if it actually works.

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
Hi all, Thanks very much for all the advice given, most appreciated.

My sister phoned my doctor to again explain how bad ive been and he is now getting me an urgent ENT appointment and has also arranged for an MRI scan to be done - he has said it should be through in two weeks. I was under the impression that CT scans are more appropriate for sinus issues, but he told me he discussed it with a consultant ENT who informed him he prefers to use MRI scanning, so thats what I will be having.

Im on day 8 of the Predisone steroids (currently taking 40mg a day which is 8 tablets). The pain is still here alot, but the painkillers the doctor has given me are at least managing to take the edge off it, although it quickly comes through when I feel them wearing off, so have to keep taking constantly.

Im due to see my doctor again Monday & have the appointment with the allergy specialist on Friday next week, which my doctor referred me to at the start of this to see if any more can be done to manage my allergies. I already had allergy testing etc done by a specialist 3 yrs ago, so know what my allergies are etc & most of the time manage them pretty well, but for some reason this time its gone haywire and nothing seems to be working. Ive heard a few people mention that the steroids do help, so Im waiting on them starting to work. Im just so glad i'll be having the scan to check me out. I know its likely to be sinusitus as it has been in the past, but things can change in 3 years and so this hopefully will shed some light on whats going on in there. I hope!

Ive started a blog on living with allergies if anyone would like to read & contribute any tips let me know or message me and will send the link. I presume links cant be posted on here?

Re: SINUS - ALLERGY HELL! Please help
Finally your doctor is listening to your complaints. Too bad it had to go on for such a long time. Predisone is not the answer to your problem -- only temporily covering your symptoms. Good to hear you will be going for further testing/scans. Hopefully you will be getting to the root of your health problems.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it is such a relief after two months of being like this. I agree on the Pred front, trouble is my doctor seems to think its what will help reduce the inflammation and let my tubes drain, so shall wait and see what happens. It just seems something has obviously really affected me alot to make me like this for so long, as usually after an allergy attack and infection id be over it within a few weeks, while this time its run and run and gotten worse not better. It all started following paint fumes and work being done in the office where I work, and has just carried on since then. Ive lost heaps of pay as my work arent paying me more than the bare minimum and my union are trying to help on that front, but its a total nightmare.

Thanks all for the advice, really helps. I will keep you posted on how I go, as have app with allergy specialist next Fri x
