Most digusting post you've ever read

About 7 months ago my dogs were diagnosed with fleas. I'm 64 and have had dogs of one kind or another for 40 years. Never had a flea problem. About a month after I had the dogs (2 Chihuahuas) treated I started getting bites on myself. I called in an nationally known exterminator. He's making his 4th maybe 5th trip tomorrow to spray my little house. I live alone. Now the largest issue and one I can't discuss with anyone except on an anonymous board like this. The fleas found their way to my nose and into my sinuses. They are there, believe me. They appear to be on the right side only. For at least 3 months I've tried to self medicate using a neti pot, and lately a concoction of wintergreen and aromatic oils I got at a health food store. Nothing helps. I made an appointment for next thursday with a specialist (eye ear nose). I have avoided this because of my finances. I'm nearly broke. It will cost me hundreds just to see this guy even with my med. insurance. The only reason I post this here is the anonymous relief I get by sharing my misery with the internet. Sorry.

Dumb question but how can you tell? When you blow your nose, are there fleas in the results?

Just a side note, you will also need to be tested for worms. I'm sure the doctor will know this but if you've ingested fleas in some way, you probably also have worms. They rather go together.

And while this is a problem, it's no where near the grossest thing I've read. Good luck. Hope it all works out for you.

Yes I find fleas when blowing my nose (sometimes). Started one night probably months ago, Blood out of one nostril. Fleas followed when I cleared my nose. I think they were in both sides and I eventually tried home remedies, and left side seems free now. Neti pot with basic salt solution produced some positive results. Adding oils (a drop or two ) like wintergreen or eucalyptus produced more results but I'm afraid of permanent damage. So I'm going to doctor next week. As far as worms, tape worms, I've monitored the dogs. I try to check my own eliminations. Nothing yet but I know it's a good possibility. I have to clear this old house of fleas before I can seek total solution otherwise I'll just have to repeat it. My GP of 15 years had no idea how to approach problem. Thanks for reply.

Re: Most digusting post you've ever read

I know it takes more money but treating the dogs with Advantage type flea treatments does a world of good to get rid of fleas. Each treatment will last a month on the dog. There are several brands but in my experience they all work very well and I've never had any negative effect on the dog's health. Unfortunately a friend had bad luck with the cheat store brands and with such small dogs, I'd not risk that.

Even once you get on top of the fleas in the house, there will always be eggs that are missed that will hatch later. I'm sure you know more about fleas than I do, but having the treatments on the dogs going forward will not allow any additional fleas to get a foothold. If you have a vet that will write prescriptions, the treatments can be ordered on line and save you some money. But if you are paying to have your home exterminated, this is a small additional cost that will give you huge bang for the buck.

I love my doggies. They are a lot of comfort but this is the type of annoyance that can go along with them, isn't it. Hang in there.

The two dogs were taken care of immediately, months ago.. They have Vet supplied applications every month. I worry about their comfort more than mine, believe me. They are O.K.. This whole process is taking much longer than I anticipated. It's really getting me down.
