    Large Sinus Polyp

I had a CT done of my head due to having Ocular Migraines and visual disturbances. All was normal except a "large Polyp in Right Sinus". I have an appt next Tuesday with a Specialist for a possible biopsy. Can anyone share any experiences? Thanks, Oleander

    Re: Large Sinus Polyp

Well, I have 3 cysts (or polyps), one in each maxillary (2.5 cm and 2.8 cm) and 1.1 cm in the sphenoid. Extreme headaches, dizziness, nausea, occipital and dental abscess/pain. The current view is that cysts are incidental and benign, but mucoceles need to be biopsied (not sure about polyps, though apparently they couldn't decide what mine was). As you can see polyps are very common, so I wouldn't worry too much. I do know that you can have them removed, and I am going for a follow up in a few weeks because my dentist says there is nothing else they can do right now and I am exhausted from pain.
I did get ocular migraines also... some shimmering reflection with zig zag distortion, and also sparkler like stuff. A bit scary. I have read that sphenoid cysts can affect vision and in the mornings I have difficulty engaging the muscle of my R eyelid. I also have much worse vision in that eye.

I've had a lot of experience with polyps. Mine are allergy related- I was a smoker who didn't know that she was allergic to cigarette smoke.
One polyp isn't a big deal. Does it affect your breathing? Can the doctor see it while they look up you nose, or is it just on the CT scan? If so, you might want to consider a shot of cortisone to shrink it, if it bothers you at all.
My polyps (I had 44 of them removed many years ago) were all benign.
    Best wishes to you, Sue

Nasal polyps are almost always benign, but they can can congestion, even pain and they have a tendency to recur. Generally a single polyp can be removed quickly and easily in a simple procedure (that could even be done in the office depending on the sophistication of your physician).

    Re: Large Sinus Polyp

This might sound gross. I had polyps for 3 years and then got a chest infection. The doc gave me antibiotics for this and IT CLEARED my sinus probs as well.
Both my nostrils are open now. My polyps have shrunk and I can BREATH at last.
My nostrils were both totally blocked with polyps. They have now dried up and every now and again I get sneezes and blow out dried polyps. Hard green stuff the size of a fingernail. The first sneeze I had blew out a nail size wet round polyp.
Saved myself big bucks in DIY. No more sinus. Yipeee.

    Re: Large Sinus Polyp

    Sico-

I suspect you are getting polyps confused with dried mucus. It's not physically possible to dislodge a polyp by blowing your nose because polyps are actually part of the mucus membrane in your nose (and if you could dislodge one it would be skin, clear mucus and a lot of blood).

It sounds like you had a nasty and prolonged sinus infection that was cleared up by antibiotics (which is great) and still get some dried mucus from time-to-time, but antibiotics don't do anything to treat polyps and I'd hate for someone to think they could blow their nose hard enough to dislodge a polyp because they might actually hurt themselves if they blew that hard

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

    Re: Large Sinus Polyp

I kid you not. I had 100% blockage in 1 nostril and 90% in the other. I could actually see them in a mirror.
After the antibiotics, they totally shrunk to where I had 100% opening in both.
I had sneezing bouts and blew out a lot of hard stuff.
One morning I woke up with one nostril totally blocked again. Got a sneezing bout and blew my nose. A blob the size of my finger nail shot into the tissue.
I actually felt it plop into the tissue. It looked like a piece of a jelly fish. No pain and a bit of blood came out.
That was 3 months ago and I have had no probs since.
