Sinus Congestion, Insomnia, Lots of Doctors, and No Answers...

Hey everyone!

I'm posting about my dad's health situation, in hopes someone may have some ideas, new directions to go.

He has had mild allergy-type symptoms involving his sinuses for over a year now. He contributed this to dog dander (him and my mother have three dogs, who all sleep in the bedroom at night). The bedroom has flooring, no carpet, and my mother is a very efficient housekeeper, so the dust is pretty minimal. Dad invested in at IQAir HealthPro Plus air purifier, apparently one of the best available, and he seemed to notice a difference. The sinus congestion, however, did not completely disappear, but was minimal, and as he's not one to "overreact" or take meds, he left it all year. I will mention that he has maintained regular physicals and things like blood pressure testing over the last few years, and has always been told he's in pretty good shape for a guy in his sixties.

This last spring, his congestion became more acute, and was accompanied with clear mucous. I introduced him to sinus rinsing, which he embraced, and performed daily, twice a day, and still does. It still helps temporarily. His symptoms came to include more nasally speech, and an overall stuffed-up feeling, and he finally went to see his doctor, asking if he could have developed a dog allergy. This doc said he would not have suddenly developed a dog allergy at the age of sixty-nine, then diagnosed him with hay fever, told him to suck it up, keep "rinsing" and take antihistamines. The symptoms became even worse, and started to affect Dad's sleep. He found he would experience loss of breath when he'd bend over to pick something up. He went back to same doctor, came out again with the same diagnosis.

Long story short, my father has now seen at least three different gp's, had numerous hospital tests, and been prescribed antihistamines, steroids (pills and sprays and puffers), penicillin (which made him retain a TON of water), TUMS, acid reducers, and probably a few other things I'm unaware of. He's NEVER been a pill popper, and aside from a couple of minor things over the years, he's always had good health, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. He had stomach cramping a couple of weeks ago, which was a side effect of the current prescription. He's now in worse shape, quite possibly due to these medications' side effects, than he was before seeing the first doctor. He has been surviving on literally one or two hours of sleep a night, and cannot nap during the day although he tries. He saw a much sought-after Ears/Nose/Throat specialist yesterday, and this guy couldn't find a thing wrong, except for obvious congestion, caused by what, we don't know. He did comment that a facial bone on one side was a little crooked, that he could surgically fix this, but when asked if it was the cause of the problem, he was pretty doubtful.

I may also mention that Dad has had chronic ear wax build up since his teens, but has maintained this for years with warm olive oil, and the specialist could find no blockages. They have had the house checked out for mold, and are repairing a leak that was discovered, but no mold.

His present state is awful, to the point that my oldest brother thinks he's not long for this world. He's stuffed up, nasally, weak, haggard, VERY miserable and irritable, maintaining one or so hours of sleep per twenty-four, and does not walk much anymore, whereas he used to religiously walk his dogs twice a day, and run errands all over town on foot. His penis has shrunk, his testicles have swollen WAY up, and he now has a water-filled "udder" under his belly. We used to make fun of his funny "chicken legs", but now they are so swollen, it looks as if he has no knee or ankle joints. He has been taking water pills for this, but they don't seem to be working, and after his doctors visit today, well, he dismissed my question as to what did they do with a "I don't even want to talk about it". Meaning, I believe, that they didn't do much of anything.

If you have read this far, thank you so much. I know this is very, very long. We really don't know what to do at this point. He has an MRI scheduled for the middle of September, but he seems to get worse by the week. I'm concerned this will also yield nothing, another dead end. I have a nine day trip planned for the end of next week, and I'm dreading leaving, in case of something happening.

Any suggestions of any kind would be so appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Antihistamines and steroids are not that effective. Do your parents have to sleep with the dogs in their bedroom? The reason why Iím asking this is that, dogs and other pets have pet dent that is known for being a sinusitis trigger. Also has your father had a brain scan/CT Scan to see it he does not have nasal polyps that could be causing this constant congestion.

If you do not mind me asking how big are your fathers nasal openings, if they are small then it could be a deviated septum , associated with genetic connective tissue disorders. You can spot a deviated septum by the following symptoms... infections of the sinus and sleep apnoea, snoring, repetitive sneezing, facial pain, nosebleeds, difficulty with breathing and mild to severe loss of the ability to smell. I hope this was helpful.
