    Still sick after sinus surgery

    Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting because frankly, I am just hoping someone has some good advice for me. I just recently had sinus surgery (removal of nasal polyps) because I had chronic sinusitis. I had this surgery only once before in 2007 when I was 15, and then just a few weeks ago (2/13/14) and I am 21 now. The surgery went smoothly according to my surgeon and the recovery was going fine for a while. After I got my splits removed I got my first breath of fresh air, something that was shortly lived. For about two weeks now I have had a really bad sinus infection. I have taken a full course of the z-pack and today is my last day of a course of cipro and I feel like I am getting worse. I am losing faith in this surgery and have no idea what to do at this point. I just want to feel better and know this whole experience wasn't a waste of time and money. I irrigate everyday with the bulb bottle and I am still blowing out some dark yellowish goop. My surgeons office was closed today for my appointment (thanks, snowstorm) so I go next Friday. I'm really just looking for some opinions or advice about what to expect from here. What's the next step, as far as I know this surgery was supposed to clear up the severity of these issues and right now, you could mistake me for having my polyps back already. I am beyond frustrated...please help!!!

The only antibiotic that works for my sinus infections is Levaquin. About 6 weeks after my surgery I got an infection and instead of an oral antibiotic, the doctor prescribed an antibiotic wash that I had to use 2x a day. I hated doing it...I'm used to using the Grossan Nasal Irrigator but this had to be cold and it hurt. But I have to say, it did clear up the infection and I had no more until I had to fly with a cold a year later. You might ask your doctor about the wash and if he'd switch you to Levaquin. It's a very strong antibiotic and doctors are hesitant to prescribe it, but maybe if you discuss it with him, he will. It's a 10 day course.

I've never heard of the wash before but I'll talk to him and see if it's an option. I've tried levaquin before without any decent results but at this but, it can't hurt to try again. I see him on Friday. I am just really hoping he doesn't need to take me back into surgery, im already a month and a half into my absence from work. Thank you for the reply though, it's nice to know im not alone!

I think it's a little early to be totally recovered from the surgery esp if you have a sinus infection. Give it time.

I know im not totally recovered but 16 straight days of a sinus infection doesn't seem normal after having this surgery, especially after two full courses of antibiotics (with no sign of it going away). There has to be something wrong. I feel the exact way I did before my surgery. I can't sleep through the night and I can't think straight. Honestly im just miserable. There's no way this is how I should be feeling right now. I really hope my surgeon has some good news for me or at least an answer. Im just tired of all of this

Have you ever tried the breathe right nasal strips?

Re: Still sick after sinus surgery

I have tried the breathing strip with no luck. Saw my surgeon today and he said the sinus infection is gone and my turbinates are just swollen. Gave me a shot of kenalog 80 (steroid shot) and told me to see a lung specialist and talk about systemic steroids. I really don't want to add steroids in my already large arsenal of medication, hopefully the kenalog works for a few months. The last time I got it, it wore off only a month in. Wish me luck

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I can relate to ongoing challenges with sinuses. This winter has been a tough one for me. My situation is a bit different so the only reason for my post is to extend some big time empathy across the miles.

Re: Still sick after sinus surgery

I would be willing to give anything a go at this point. I saw my surgeon who gave me a shot of kenalog 80 and sent me on my way saying in a few days I would be a new person. It has helped, but last time I got the shot prior to the surgery it helped way more. Im still stuffed up every single day.
