    Has anyone had a sinus infection and lost or had a deminished ability to smell or taste most things for longer than a week?

    Hi, I have a lot of sinus/nasal problems. Post nasal drip, infections, deviated septum. I can't really say I have diminished smell but my sense of smell has been off. I seem to be smelling things differently than other people and most things have been smelling bad to me. I definitely have diminished taste and sometimes food I normally like tastes spoiled or metallic. This has been going on for months. A total loss of taste and smell should probably be looked at. Has your problem resolved?

    My taste Smell has gotten better...but I too have a odd smell up in my sinuses...smells like burnt biscuits. Weird...
    I think I have polyps and/or deviation.
    Question...Can polyps cause this?

    Weird, i sometimes get a burnt smell too but with me it's like burnt cheese. I don't know if polyps can cause the strange odor but when I went to the surgeon for a consult he shook his head in agreement when I told him about the bad odors I smell. Made me feel a lot less crazy! These nasal abnormalities must do something to the sense of smell.

    I agree. I know, according to several, smell reduction is one of the symptoms. It seems to me that if air flow is reduced; smells, stale air or unwanted flavors could get trapped.

    Re: Taste and Smell Disorder

    I recently had dental work done which involved a sinus elevation. For about two months after this, I smelled something like wood burning when nobody else could smell it. It was so bad in the house that I called for furnace repair thinking that was the problem.
    After a while I had the same smell everywhere I went and at that point realized that it was me. By now the problem is gone{and the furnace is mostly off for spring}
    Very weird -never told the doctor lest he would think I am totally nuts!

    Rebecca Hi
    I have found this whole smell thing very unnerving. Like your brain is trying to make sense of this odor and missinturps it somehow.....because I know ... we ain't burnt those biscuits.
    It is getting better but it takes a long time for nerves to mend if damaged -- I take it.
    I hope it continues to improve
    Thanks
