9+ Years Of Seborrheic Dermatitis On Face

Hello I'm an 18 year male that has had seb derm on my face and scalp for the best 9+ years. It started behind the ears and then spread to the face. When it first occurred on the face my skin which is normally brown began to discolor into looking white. A kid at my school even asked me if i had what Michael jackson had. That was about 5 years ago and now the whiteness has somewhat gone away and is now less noticeable. I have been to many dermatologist's in the past and have been prescirped lots of steroid, protopic, and other creams which i used for a while but now don't use because of the skins addictiveness to it and other side effects (skin thinning). Also they didn't really help me that much. I gave up on trying for the past 2 years i have only used a cleanser on my face and moisturizer twice a day and juz lived with the peeling of the skin. Every morning i wud juz take a washcloth and wipe all the dead skin off my face and repeat that everyday. I don't know what to do and I'm seeing a derm in a couple days and I'm looking for advice. I don't know if this could possibly be related to Candida I really have no clue. I was planning on asking for loprox or ketoconazole cream when I go to the Derm.

Treatments Tried
Protopic, Ellidel (allergic reaction), Hc cream 0.5% to 2%, UAV Light Treatment, Shampoo on face (tried H&S but didn't really work out) and probably others that I have forgotten.

SUMMARY OF CONDITION

Face
Affects ear folds, inner ear, forehead, eyebrows, in-between eyebrows, entire nose, cheeks, mustache area, parts of beard, chin, and parts of neck
Areas affected are scaly (yellowish), red, discolored, and eyebrow hairs are shedding.
Over the past 9+ years I have had this condition on the face it has never been itchy but ~ 2 months ago it has had periods of itchiness
Forehead has scaly bumps
Occasionally when exercising or physical activity face gets periods of burning prickling sensation(1-3 seconds)
When beard grows long scaling gets worse in the beard area
Under close light scales around chin and lower cheeks are more visible

Eyes
Diagnosed with Blepharatis by general doctor ~ November 4
Eyelids were matting together when waking
Currently eyelids have dandruff
Eyes sore as day goes on

Scalp
Scalp dandruff comfortably maintained
Most effective shampoo used in the past has been Stieprox (antifungal) but currently using Head and Shoulders (Pyrithione Zinc)
Noticing abnormal amount of hair loss on scalp for ~ 1 month even though seb derm is controlled on scalp

my advice is to stay away from steriods (hertiscome cream), wash ur face dutifully twice a day with facial wash, giving the affected area a rub everytime, drink more water and stay away from air-con.

Hi. I've had seb derm for most of my adult life. I get it in scalp, on face, behind ears and on chest.

I've used cortico-steroids and other bits, but recently I was turned on to Apple Cider Vinegar. It stinks like hell but it works.

I bought a brand called Bragg's. It's very inexpensive (a bottle cost me $6.95 and that Australian dollars). Look for organic, unfiltered acv with the 'mother'...that's the sediment. I'm still experimenting with ways to apply and various mixtures to cut the smell, but it really is good stuff.

Good luck.

Hi there,

I have seb. derm. too. Mine is not as bad on my face, [mostly mild on my forehead] but worse on my scalp and behind my ears too. [think crust sometimes--YUCK!]

Anyway...because you say that your hair is falling out, [abnormal amount] and your eyebrows are thinning too, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to get your thyroid levels checked. I have hypothyroid, [underactive] and I know those are symptoms, or could be....I had them both. It can also cause the skin conditions to be worse, aggravating anything you already have. I know mine [skin] improved after I was put on thyroid hormones and my levels became normal again...and tends to get worse again when my levels are off.

Good luck to you,
Deda

Hi...

I have read many times of people saying they had very good results w/ apple cider vinegar, so I'll be heading off to the health food store as soon as I get a chance. to get a bottle of it. I would imagine you could mix some with water, [?] in a cup, pour over scalp, and let it sit on there for an hour or so...to do it's thing? Or maybe try dabbing in on the bad places with a cotton ball?

I'm anxious to try it. There's just been way too many posts saying positive responses on it that I think it justifies a good trial run with it. So,...you've really seen some [substantial] improvement?

Thanks..

Deda,
I hope you have found out something by now --if vinegar helps your face with Seborrheic Dematitis??
Please keep us informed.

A good mix is -- vinegar with water and apply let it dry. 2 teaspoons per glass-- The idea is to make the solution acidic and not alkaline like most all soaps do. Bacteria does not live in an acidic environment. But,Seborrheic Dermatitis is not a bacteria problem but isn't it like dandruff--? It is what babies get that is called cradle cap and is cured with a shampoo or cream that contains an ingrediant that kills fungus like Nizoral or Difulcan. In adults is is cured with a shampoo -- anti-danduff.

White distilled vinegar does not smell as strong as regular vinegar.

I have used this for 30 years as a deodorant.

Re: 9+ Years Of Seborrheic Dermatitis On Face

Hello, I also suffer from Seborrheic Dermatitis. I know how you feel because my condition is a very serious one.

I have embarked on a personal quest to ultimately cure my Seborrhia and I believe I have. It has only been a week, but my measurements taken have thus far worked.

I have been recently pondering every possible cause of my condition and come to the conclusion that it is ALL about your diet. Applying creams to the face is tedious and only hides the result of a problem elsewhere.

I noticed my skin condition occurred around the same time I started experiencing digestive system problems: irregular bowel movements, slight rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain when eliminating.

I learned that 70% of my immune system resides in my digestive tract, which means if my **** stays there for sometimes 3-4 days, I'm sure my body struggles to fight the bacteria that is there as well. So, this leads me to probiotics.

I started taking Culturelle, a probiotic that promotes digestive health by supplying your body with Lactobacillus GG. I also eat a serving of probiotic enhanced yogurt with the pill, along with two tablets of Fiber Choice tablets to help induce a bowel movement and relieve myself of strain during a toilet session.

Some health specialists believe Seborrheic Dermatitis is related to irritation to a yeast that resides on your face, which supports my idea that the Seborrhia is a result of a poor immune system caused by failure to clean your digestive tract out and keep the good bacteria protecting your insides so you don't have a weakness to the organisms that live on the outside of your body.

Try it and see if it works for you.

Culturelle, probiotic enhanced yogurt, and fiber supplement... and hell... you can do alot more than just those three things. These are just a few steps I've taken to stop Seborrhia for good.
