Rashes I have had and have.

Hello, I am having some skin related troubles. In 2008 I acquired a rash that lasted a week, it was blotchy and raised and non itchy. It went away in a couple weeks. Fast forward to last July and the same rash appeared and went away just the same. The rash appeared on my torso and arms, and size was about silver dollar and slightly reddish. I have had a small rash on my right lower leg for forever it seems, its itchy and flares up but if I moisturize it it settles down but its always there never goes away altogether. I have also had a very persistent red raised rash on the left side of my head above my ear. I have had it for a very long time. It can get dried out and flake but its ALWAYS there, doesn't itch but it can flare up, inflame and hurt. Its fairly large. I was diagnosed with eczema since I was a kid and am wondering if all these symptoms are part of that eczema. I know it never goes away. I don't have insurance right now so I can't get a doctors diagnosis and was hoping you could shed some light. Thank you.

Re: Rashes I have had and have.

Sounds like eczema to me.

The best thing for eczema is to find a moisturizer that works well for you and apply it every day as soon as you get out of the shower. When you shower, use a gentle soap. My family buys only Dove Sensitive Skin soap.

When it flares up, use a hydrocortisone cream just until it gets better. You don't want to use it more than a week or two, because it can thin the skin.

If this isn't working, save up some money to see a dermatologist. Don't waste money on a walk-in clinic, ER or family doctor, they are not well equipped to help you manage this in the long run. Ask the dermatologist for samples and possibly help with prescription costs. There are some really good new eczema treatments out there, but they can be expensive.

Elocon! It's a prescription ointment that gets rid of mine the next day!
