    Recurrent breast eczema...

    Hi there,
I'm a 21 year old female who for the last eighteen months has been suffering from what my GP has diagnosed as 'chronic nipple eczema' of the left breast. At first I was wrongly diagnosed with ductal thrush and given Fluconazole and Daktarin cream...I took this for two weeks before last Christmas and it did nothing. I was then told I had mastitis...despite not being a nursing mother.

While I have suffered from eczema all my life I never suffered with it around my breasts at all, it tended to be on my legs/creases in my arms.
When I went back a third time, they decided it must just be eczema, despite the fact I was near tears when she palpated my breast due to the pain. I have never suffered with painful eczema, it's always just been dry/annoying patches of it.

They sent me off with some Hydrocortisone and Diprobase...low and behold this didn't work either, my GP decided we had to hit it with something stronger and prescribed Betnovate...which thinned the skin and made it even more sensitive. Eventually I just left it, and used an emollient on it, it was never fully better, and the nipple appeared darker than the Right breast but I could deal with it then all the skin split again and I had to go back.

On my final visit in October she referred me to a Dermatologist who I am seeing in three weeks, but over the last week the pain has got very intense and the skin is once again incredibly sore angry and red and I am getting a frequent stabbing feeling around the areola... I have never found any lumps etc in the breast but I know with some types of cancer there may not be lumps present. Will a dermatologist be able to take skin biopsies etc to test for anything more sinister? Or do you think it's worth another visit to my GP and demand to be referred to a breast specialist? I realise inflammatory breast cancer/Paget's disease of the nipple is incredibly rare in someone my age, but I'm fed up of being fobbed off by my GP and not getting on top of the issue? Any advice?
