    Does taking Magnesium before bed help?

    Dear all,
    Does taking Magnesium before bed helps you sleep? Even if you take it once in a while. (not daily for treatment)

    Dear jeffb43,

    Magnesium feeds the nerves but I suggest taking it in the morning with food. Too much can cause excessively loose stools, which is how we know if were taking too much per day. Taking it at bedtime doesn't directly induce sleep. I think it is helpful overall for relaxing muscles, which in turn makes for more relaxing sleep.

    I like to take Melatonin for restful sleep. However it also causes the dream state that can interfere with sleep. I started out with 10 mg per evening, and if extreme dreaming occurs I just break the pill and take less per evening, an hour or so before sleep.

    I've heard it's good for sleep. However, the times I've taken it I didn't notice any improvement in sleep.

    Jeffb43, first of all, magnesium needs time to build up in your blood stream, so if you are only taking it now and then it isn't going to do anything. What magnesium does do is help with muscle cramps and help relax them...so if taken at bedtime, you MIGHT see a difference over time. You would need to be on it for months.

    I take calcium WITH magnesium every morning and every night at dinner time, it has helped my muscle cramps...which in turn helps me sleep through the night, but it does not help "sleeping" as a problem.

    I dont know if that helps you...but I do recommend that you have blood work done before starting any type of magnesium supplementation; you do not want to take too much.
