    Unhappy Pre-Sleep Apnea?

I am an 18 year old male in good physical condition. I take 1 daily centrum preformance multivitamin and a prescription topical gel to keep my face clear. I usually drink alcohol twice a week (Friday and Saturday) and smoke socially as well. I have always had trouble falling asleep but a lot of teens do. The past month though, something very troubling has been happening. Every night, I will be falling asleep. As I get tired, and I'm about to fall asleep, something happens, and I dont know what it is. Its kind of like a jolt, but not intense. Its not shocking anymore because I'm used to it. Its not like I can't breeth, its just that I'm more conscious of my breath/heart beat. Its ultimately something that pulls me away from sleep. Sometimes it happens once or twice, and some times it keeps me up way too late. This is very scary and it has been going on for a long time. I will be falling asleep, and then just sort of gasp. I sort of ruled out sleep apnea, because I'm not asleep when it happens. I couldnt find anything on the internet about this. On nights that I am drunk, it doesnt happen, but this may be because I'm more tired, pass out, or stay up later anyway. I'm typing this at 3:10 am, and I have 5:30 am baseball practice in a few hours. Because this has been happening, Ive been sleeping for 3 hours when I get home from school. This is probably making it worse. If anyone has any idea what this is, please point me in the direction of some useful information because I am very worried about it. Thanks

This happens to me too!!! I'm not totally sure what it is, but I do notice that it happened more frequently with increased caffiene or nicotien before bed. I think that it is from PVC's (heart palpitations) that come from having too much stimulant in my body. Basically, your heart beats weird and makes you have these mini panic attacks which jolt you awake. Very common, and not dangerous at all.

They aren't dangerous. Try cutting down on smoking and any other kind of stimulant before bed and see if that helps any. Also go to the "heart problems" board and check out the topics on PVC's, see if this sounds familiar to you at all.

    Re: Pre-Sleep Apnea?

thanks a lot. i only have one cup of coffee in the morning and only smoke cigarettes on weekends so i dont really have any stimulants in my body when i go to bed. im going to try not drinking coffee in the morning and all out quitting cigarettes and see if that helps, but im not sure thats it. is there anyone else that could provide some info?

    Re: Pre-Sleep Apnea?

I had episodes of this 5 years ago, just as you describe it. When i would wake up, I would actually be sort of anxious, panicky...had a neuro test, blood work, check up, everything was good. I do have MVP (mitral valve prolapse) which i hear could be a precursor to anxiety attacks. My doc ended up sticking me on a low dose of paxil for anxiety and it helped. I dont wake up anymore. Although, i recenltly was diagnosed with sleep apnea, which "I THINK" Ive had back then and could have triggered it, not sure. but it hasnt happened since. I am 28, 200lbs, so im not horribly out of shape.

YOu said you were healthy, I would consider seeing the types of things you eat before bed / in the evening, are you under stress? Try to knock out stimulants. SOUNDS to me like possible anxiety. Funny you mention it doesnt happen when you drink, well your more relaxed, which leads me to some kind of anxiety. Keep me posted on how your doing Im interested since Ive had similar stuff happen. Good luck, relax

    Re: Pre-Sleep Apnea?

Hello to phishjamo4, From Gee Gee, (Old enough to be your Mom !)

I can certainly relate to what you are going through. I have had a problem for more than a couple of years, of snoring. I snore so bad that my hubby can't even sleep with me. Fortunately, we have a big house. (especially since our kids are grown and gone from home).

Recently, we went on a week-end trip, we had two king size beds, and he had to wake me up several times, not only for my snoring and keeping him awake, but he says that I seem to be struggling for breath. Sometimes, I wake myself up, SNORING !
This is when I decided to mention this to my NEW Doctor. He is very concerned, and sent me to a specialist of ' sleep apena '. And, I will be going to a sleep Clinic, in the hospital. I called my friend, who has sleep apena, and she says it's no big deal, they just hook up little electrodes to you, and observe you through your sleep for however long, usually overnight !
    THIS NO LAUGHING MATTER, AND,
it can be detramental to your health ! She has been telling me that I have this for a while now. Well, for once I think she's right !

I STRONGLY advise you to see your Doctor. This is of great concern, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, okay ?

At the present time, I am reading everything I can on this subject, and let me tell you, I have NOT seen ANYTHING about ' anxiety '.
I only give advice from my own experiences..........., I have been treated for years and years for ANXIETY, before I had this sleep problem.
How someone who has been diagnosed with this could NOT guide you to the Doctor, is beyond me !

I will keep you posted, okay ?

I will be glad to answer any questions for you, just let me know.

I hope I have been of some help to you,

    Take Care,

    Gee Gee

    Re: Pre-Sleep Apnea?

yeah but i dont think its threatening, because im not sleeping, it happens and doesnt let me fall asleep. once i fall asleep, i sleep very well always. its just annoying and frustrating. maybe ill just make an adjustment for now to take long naps in the afternoon (almost always fits into my schedule) and stay up till im dead tired. i really dont know what else i can do. the past two nights ive tried not to nap to see if i could fall asleep earlier, but i gave in because i was so tired.
