Waking Up Coughing/Choking Nearly Every Night

    Hi,
I am a 38 year Man, Over the last few months I have been waking up coughing and have a choking feeling, sometimes my wife hears me and wakes me, After a sit up and have a drink, I will go back to sleep, this may happen a couple of times a night or not at all.
It leaves me with a very sore throat.
Also my wife says that I breathe funny when I sleep taking a big breathe in but not releasing it for up to a minute later.

    Can anyone advise please...??

Sounds like sleep apnea. Are you usually tired during the day? Have it checked out. Also could be post nasal drip. Good luck

Re: Waking Up Coughing/Choking Nearly Every Night

It is classsic obstructive sleep apnea. My son and I have it. I would have sixty events an hour and wake at least once an hour every night during my sleep until I was diagnosed and prescribed a CPAP. My son 5 was diagnosed at the age of 4. He has had sleep apnea since birth.. but it took til he was 4 to get diagnosed. Sleep apnea is genetically linked and parents often have children that have it.

You need to go to a sleep specialist. Have a sleep study and get treatment. Bring your wife or have her write down what she observes.

    Good luck to you.

    Sincerely,
    MG
