Should I just take the Ambien?

so I have been putting off taking the Ambien CR samples my doctor gave me for a long time. Every night I feel pretty good that I will get to sleep (get in bed tired, listen to relaxation cd, etc.) but of course, after an hour or two of lying there I start to get anxious about not sleeping and the cycle continues. I know I should get up after 15-30 and do something else but I always feel confident so I delay getting out of bed until much later, around 2 am or so.

Anyway, this is obviously not working as I have been averging 3 hours of sleep for the past 2 months or so. I have take Tylenol PM which actually doesnt really help me fall asleep just makes me feel up but in a daze. Some thing with klonopin that I have for anxiety as needed.

I think it is time to try the AmbienCR. I have the 6.25 and 12.5 samples. Which one should I try first? He also said I shouldnt take it for more than a couple of days. Is the thinking that taking Ambien for a day or two will help the body readjust and train me for sleep?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

hello scott. i can only advice you from my own unfortunate experience.
if you start taking ambien which is a sleeping pill, your body won't be adjusted to sleep on its own. you will have to use it night after night and then you will need to withdrawl from it, and then what would you do?you will be in the same problem again. tell me, why cannot you sleep?do you suffer from pain??(that's why i cannot sleep). if you don't suffer from pain do you drink lot's of coffee after 12:00pm?, you should limit you coffee drinking to 2-3 cups a day and not more than that a day. do you eat things packed with caffeine like chocolate?, coca cola?, you should limit this also. did you try drinking chamomile tea?. if nothing helps, then you should take a sleeping pill. i, personally, don't like ambien. have been tried it and it wasn't good for me.
you take klonopin, it's a benzo, doesn't it help you sleep??. it supppose to help some. so please let me know. so let me know if the problem is pain.

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

Thanks for the response nochange. It is not pain. It is just the fact that I am stuck in a cycle and my mind starts to race and I simply just do not fall asleep. I try meditating/relaxation CDs as I mentioned. This helps me calm down somewhat but usally I still can't sleep.

The Klonopin used to help but I think the dose is so small (.5mg and I usually just take half) that its not enough and my body is used to such a small dose.

I would like to take the Ambien just to break up this cycle and get a full nights sleep. Even if it works I do not plan on taking it more than a couple of days if that is enough to get my body to "see" that a full night sleep is possible.

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

    Scott,

Although your body does become dependant to the ambien, for some it is the only thing they can do. I have been on ambien continuously for 6 yrs. I have never had to increase my dosage, and have never had any bad side effects. The doctors do not know why I don't sleep 2 hrs is my max without meds. Each person is different.

You might want to look into a sleep study. They may be able to figure out why you can't sleep.

If you are just anti-hypnotic you might look into Valerian root, Kava Kava, or melatonin.

They are all suppliments that may help you. Be sure however to check into any possible interactions with any meds you take.

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

I think you should try the ambien, starting with the smaller dosage.
The consequences of inadequate restorative sleep are much worse
than ambien dependence and you can choose to use it only for a
couple of nights just to get some much needed sleep and then go
without it so as to break up a dependence cycle developing. Who
knows (and you won't unless you try) you might not be one of those
having a dependency tendency. That could be a song title,"dependency
tendency", yeh, yeh !! Good Luck.

I don't know anything about Ambien but have you thought of Melatonin. That works very well for me. Take 3mg about an hour before bed and you get none of the usual zombiness in the morning that most pharmaceutical sleeping pills give.
I also take it for west to east jet lag and it works great.

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

I thought Ambien (is it zolpidem? this is what my doctor gave me) should only be used for short-term treatment to get you back on the right cycle. It's only addictive if you keep using it and come to rely on it to get you to sleep, which it shouldn't have been prescribed for? (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no doctor)

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

Ambien is typically used short term. But there are certain sleep disorders that require you to use something long term. My choices were ambien or a benzo. Ambien is by fat the least addictive. I have been on it for years and I have never gone up on my dosage.

The thing is that if you are going to use it long term you need to be monitored by a MD.

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

I went to my doctor who took blood and said everything was fine. He is giving me a referel to a sleep clinic so hopefully that helps.

In the meantime, I tried to take the Ambien CR last night. I took the 6.25mg dose and it did absolutely nothing. Still did not fall asleep until 3 and slept maybe 2 hours.

Could the 12.5 mg work if the lower dose did not do a thing?

Re: Should I just take the Ambien?

So I took the 12.5 Ambien CR two nights ago and Im not sure if it worked. I took it at around 9:45pm. I was still up at around 1am not feeling sleepy at all. However I then fell asleep and slept straight until 6:30am so not sure if the Ambien just took a while or helped me once I fell asleep.

Last night I tried taking nothing and I was tired and in bed at 10:30pm. I did not fall asleep until at least 3:30am. Then I just basically was dreaming in a weird sleep/awake state until 7am.

I am going to a sleep specialist tomorrow morning but I am so frustrated!! Literally I got in bed tired last night, had some worries about falling asleep but I thought I was relaxed enough that I would fall asleep. No luck :-(
