I Fall Asleep In Random Places!

I'm a 19 year old female and this has been going on for about a year. I thought it was because I was depressed however I've had treatment, and it's still an issue...if not worse than it was before.
Almost every day in the mid-late afternoon I get this uncontrollable urge to sleep, and I can't fight it. I've fallen asleep in class, on the train, in shopping malls...almost everywhere. If I try to fight it my vision goes blurry, and a few minutes later I find myself drifting off to sleep but thinking that I'm still awake. It's very strange! It only lasts for 10-15 minutes and then I'm wide awake again, but it sometimes happens more than once a day.

It's not that I don't get enough sleep. I sleep for about 8-10 hours a night, without any snoring or wacko dreams to interrupt me. Coffee doesn't help either. I can drink two energy drinks plus a latte, and still find myself sleeping half an hour later. It's bordering on ridiculous. I've fallen asleep in the kitchen for heavens sake!

Does anyone else have this issue and even more importantly, know what it is and how to fix it?

You need a sleep study to see if you have something like sleep apnea or narcolepsy making you so tired. Then you need blood work to see if there is a possible disease causing the tiredness. And energy drinks? Why? Those things are so loaded with caffeine, they could kill you. I infact had to rush my daughter to the ER a year ago on her b-day for drowing down 2 of those a little too fast. I thought she was having a heart attack. OMG, your energy is going to go up and down on caffeine, like your taking a drug to hype you up and then you have to come back down from it.

Energy drinks don't have any effect on me. I doubt that they could kill you unless you drank about 20 of them and had an already existing heart condition in which you had to avoid caffeine for. Your daughter may be caffeine sensitive but I've never had an issue with I said, I'm still sleepy.
Anyway in regards to the sleep study, I have suggested it before but my doctor didn't think it was necessary considering that I don't have any of the "risk factors". I also have monthly blood tests because I am taking a medication that could potentially affect the liver, however the doctor also does check everything else and it's been within the normal ranges.

I would re-visit this issue with your doctor. Anytime you experience symptoms that interfere with everyday life, you need medical attention. Falling asleep wherever you are could be dangerous, and needs to be explored again with your doctor, or possibly try another Dr. until you get your questions answered.

There is a whole branch of medicine that deals with sleep disorders, so you are not alone. I am a patient of such a sleep specialist and saw him today in fact. I have both sleep apnea and restless legs, requiring both sleeping with a machine as well as taking medication daily.

Untreated, sleep disorders can lead to heart failure and other serious matters, so keep asking until you get the help you need.

Missruby, energy drinks effect everyone. They just effect everyone differently. Caffeine stays in your system for 8 hours whether you want it to or not. Your body (like mine) has just grown immune to its energetic properties. But that doesn't change the fact that it can still leave your brain racing and awake through the night. Sometimes even when we think we are asleep and getting restful sleep, the brain can tell us other wise which is why sleep clinics exist! Don't know what kinda of insurance you have, but if you can visit a sleep clinic, do so. If you need a referral, just be adamant with your doctor until he gives you one. Explain to him the amount of caffeine you are in taking just to try to stay awake and they still don't help. All those sugary energy drinks are SO BAD for you, that he SHOULD take at least that into consideration and refer you to someone who can help.

You're young and it is understandable for you to be sleepy all the time since typically, young adults inflict more 'life-style hazards' to their bodies. But you shouldn't be overlooked.

    Good luck.
