Smile 6 weeks post op c5c6 acdf

Hello,My name is Elle and I was looking to connect with people that have been through this surgery and how they are doing.I know everyone is different but I was just wondering about some things I've experienced over the years that lead up to my surgery and now some things that are happening that I wonder is considered normal as far as anyone else that has had this surgery.Since about 10 years ago I started having issues with waking up in the most horrible radiating pain in my thoracic spine.I was able to walk it off in a couple of hours.I began sleeping on the sofa and for the most part I did not wake up in pain.We bought several new beds ranging from medium to firm then soft and no matter the mattress I woke up in terrible pain. Then I began having burning pain across the back of my neck last april 2014.and then began sleeping in a recliner. After an MRI it was discovered I had a herniated disc and was advised to go home and alternate heat and ice.Well after a couple months the pain subsided in my neck but then my son had an accident in Aug 2014 which put him in a wheelchair for a few months so I was taking him to appointments and to school a lot and loading a wheelchair in and out of my car several times a day.My neck pain came back with a vengeance and brought the the most awful burning upper back and arm pain (Both arms)and absolutely exhausted .I was sleeping but it seemed it wasn't restorative due to the pain. After being jerked around by pain specialist and every other kind of doctor because no one would listen to me that it was my neck that was the problem and I knew it.Finally I was referred to a neurosurgeon and was set up for c5 c6 acdf with fusion with donor disc.I still cant sleep in my bed without waking in horrible pain across by back and down my arms still and feeling like I never even slept.I'm still sleeping in a recliner. I did however sleep on the sofa last night and was real couscous to try to stay on my back.Still woke up stiff and hurting but way better than the bed.Wondering if what I'm experiencing is common or not. I'm not taking anything for pain right now that is prescription just Tylenol extra strength( I was advised to take 4mg valium at night by my surgeon (Does nothing for my pain) that does nothing for me really.Just really need a decent night sleep and some real pain relief .Hopefully sooner than later. Thanks for reading. If Anyone has any tips for me I'd like to read about your experiences and what worked or didn't for you.Thank you-Elle

Sorry no one has responded to your post. I usually post on the Back Problems board as my issues are in the lumbar spine. Hopefully some of our cervical spine people will see this and offer some suggestions.

I have had three lumbar surgeries including two fusions. Six weeks is still early in recovery. I'm sorry to say I could provide tons of tips for issues lower down, but just have no experience with cervical! I have a hard time believing you are better off sleeping on the sofa. Be careful that you do not create lumbar issues by protecting the cervical spine only.

I found with my lumbar fusions that I could not sleep more than four hours at a time. Then I needed to get up and take a stroll around the house. This kept me from getting very stiff.

Have you been given pain meds?
