My mother is becoming paralyzed due to Cervical Disc Disorder

Hello everyone. I'm trying to find the best route to take given my mother's current situation. I hope I am posting in the correct area. Over two months ago my mother was diagnosed with Arthritis in the neck and spine/Cervical Disc Disorder. We were told that she would need surgery to have this corrected. We were referred to a specialist who then let us know that he would not perform the surgery unless we paid thousands upfront. And my mom has been denied Medicaid twice before. Upon the third time of waiting for the Medicaid to go through, we are still waiting for it to get a hearing with a judge for over a year now. I went to our local Social Services to see if there was anything I could do but was told there was no way for us to speed up the process.

Within the past few doctor visits we've had as well as hospital visits they've informed us of the urgency needed for my mother's surgery as she has nearly become paralyzed due to this. It's getting worse as the weeks pass by. We went to our local hospital and we were just referred back to the same specialist who again said he will do nothing without the money. What more can I do before it is too late? This isn't a sympathy thread.. I am just desperate to do something before my mother gets worse.

Welcome to the board. I'm sorry no one has responded to your post. I am so sorry your mom is dealing with the stress of finances in addition to her physical pain. I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't.

Does your inquiry to Social Services include looking into SSI?

My only suggestion would be to contact directly the social worker at the hospital where your mom would have the surgery to see if there might be some options there. Some hospitals maintain a fund to cover costs for patients who can't afford surgery. The social worker may know of other resources that I am not aware of.

Cool Re: My mother is becoming paralyzed due to Cervical Disc Disorder

Is there is County Hospital in your area? Like Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN or Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Traditionally county hospitals treat patients first and bill them later. They still expect to get paid, but they are a bit more understanding and humane about the whole money thing. As a bonus, they are usually teaching facilities and thus offer top of the line care!

Alternatively, make sure the provider knows she has "pending MA" with the county. MA pays usually 3 months backwards when it gets approved, so if MA is in the works and you can prove that it is, that is good enough for most providers.

    Good luck!
