NEED QUICK ADVICE... neck affecting heart?

I am in my mid-40s and quite athletic.

I need help pretty quickly if somebody is willing. Due to insurance coverage reasons, I am scheduled to take a Persantine Cardiolite within a few days. I am NOT sure that I need this.

I had received 2 EKG reports that were slightly abnormal on Pre-Op for major neck surgery. However the doctor said my heart was adequate for major neck surgery. I underwent the surgery and have recovered very well.

    The 1st EKG result was:
()Heart rate varies from 69 to 100. ???Arrhythmia
    ()Accelerated AV conduction
()Left axis deviation , consider LAFB
()Borderline low voltage in front leads

    The 2nd EKG result was:
    ()Sinus Rhythm
    ()Marked Left Axis Deviation
()Low QRS Voltages in Standard Limb Leads

My previous EKG’s were normal. I am wondering if the stenosis in my neck and flattening of my neck vertebra could have caused these heart abnormalities temporarily and now that the neck is fixed …the heart might be OK.

I don’t quite understand these results. Are any of these results significant or something to worry about? My doctor today didn’t explain much. He said it could be as simple as problems with potassium or magnesium. My potassium levels were OK that day. My magnesium levels are always low at around 20 when the norm is 32-122.

My virtual heart scans came out negative. I had 0% calcification even tho my cholesterol has been between 200 and 290 for the last 20 years. (It is NOT my diet … it is everybody in my family). My HDL is normal. My LDL is hi … usu around 168 and the norm is 0 to 130.

The doctor ONLY spent 2 minutes with me. If I wanted further testing, he recommended echocardiogram AND a persantine cardiolite test. The cardiolite injection is a radioactive substance so they can see the heart. The persantine is used to increase bloodflow since I might not have recuperated from orthopedic surgery to use the treadmill. However, I think I may just use the treadmill rather than the chemical due to side effects of the chemical.

Any thoughts about the neck stenosis causing the EKG problems? Any thoughts or precautions on my 2 EKG results?

Re: NEED QUICK ADVICE... neck affecting heart?

I read your very specific information and my only knowledge of stenosis affecting the heart was as follows:

    a. my very seasoned chiropractor told me it is very common theme in his cervical disc herniation patients to complain of irregular heart beat, and accelerated heart beat etc. He sees maybe 10 cervical disc herniation patients a year who have need of ACDF (like I just had) and they complain of same; I can tell you I had the same. Although very atheletic 120 lbs and 5'6' treadmilling with incline since i can remember and through my cervical and lumbar disc herniation - I too experienced this and spoke to him about it. Note; apparently certain specific disc levels press on specific nerves to the heart

    also,

    b. i had a taxi driver who had just had two or three level cervical fusion and he told me the stenosis and herniation had caused his heart attack. That is why he got in earlier than most for the surgery ( I waited 2-3 years for my surgery) as the heart attack being life threatening expedited his position.

I hope that you can get the information you need... I would opt for the treadmill test like I had in the past as they thought I had prolapsed valve but could not ascertain same from Ultrasound. The die sounds a little scarey but sometimes the risks as we all know are outweighed by the benefits.

Good luck.... sounds like you are pretty vigilant...so hang in there.

Since my neck surgery was successful in May ... is there a good chance that the slightly abnormal EKG will be fine as my neck solidly fuses at the 1 yr. mark? In other words, instead of going thru heart studies, I am thinking that this first time irregular EKG was probably due to the neck stenosis and flattening of the spine. Now that the pressure is relieved, could the problem easily resolve itself just as all my other neck-related symptoms did?

If so....that would mean I might wait a bit before doing huge Cardiolite workups. Maybe just see how the next few EKGs go.

I had the "wuss" stress test---my legs couldn't do the treadmill. They monitor you all through it. And I drove myself home.
