Question I don't understand this: someone help please

I posted back awhile ago that the specialist had sent me for an MRI of my cervical spine in April of this year. The results came to me in the mail stating that I have a cyst in the spinal cord at C7-T1.
My doctor quit his practise since I had the first MRI, but on my last visit with him he ordered a second MRI to check the cyst to make sure it hadn't changed at all. I had that MRI last week and just got the results back. It says this:

There is a tiny focus of high signal again seen centrally within the cervical cord at C7-T1. This measures 7mms x 3mms x 2mms. There is no enhancement on the post Gadolinium images. The size and appearance of this lesion have not changed significantly since the prior study.
The remainder of the cervical cord is unremarkable and unchanged from the previous.
No change in the non-specific tiny focus of high signal in the cervical cord at C7-T1. This is unlikely to represent a malignant process, and would be consistent with a tiny focal syrinx or a focus of myelomalacia. Again, clinical correlation, specifically if any history of trauma in this area would be helpful.

And that means what? It also says I should have another follow-up study in one year's time to ensure stability. If this is from the whiplash it would be very helpful to know. I'm going to see a lawyer next week anyhow because the insurance company is giving me a hard time. Does anyone know what myelomalacia is? What is a syrinx? Thanks.

This can very much be from a bad case of whiplash!
I am not trained very well in all this terminology....however, I know that myelomalacia is to do with the blood vessel structure in supprt to the spinal cord (the vessels that feed into and from the cord). Sometimes, certain diseases compromise the structure such as lupus, or diseases of the aorta. Sometimes complicated surgeries in your abdomen can cause lingering issues of abnormality.
Have you asked your doctor to decipher these results for you???

My son had a SYRINX. He had surgery to collapse it on 6/25....surgery successful to date. Two month MRI follow up is in two weeks.

If I were to decipher this today, I would say you have a dialated spinal cord, a syrinx (accumulation of fluid in/on the spinal cord -known as syringomeylia or hydrosyringomeylia). The vessels to that site are inflammed due to the extra spinal pressure. Yes, whiplash can cause this.
If you are seeing an attorney, I would ask your Neuro to also provide you a letter stating he believes this could have occurred during the accident.

I hope this helps and please let us know how you are doing!!!!

    Thanks for the reply Tracie

I want to go to a neurologist, but I need a family doctor to refer me to one and I don't have a family doctor. (There are 25,000 people in our city without a family doctor). The lawyer will be sending me to different doctors for assesments so that will be my only hope of getting a proper diagnosis. I've also considered going to the walk-in clinic to see if one of the doctors there can refer me to a specialist. It makes things so difficult because dealing with insurance companies is bad enough, but trying to deal with them and not having a doctor to give you a diagnosis is nearly impossible. The insurance company sent me to one of their assesment centres a while ago and of course the doctor there said there was nothing wrong with me. He even cranked my head around to prove that I could move it that way when I had already said I couldn't. My neck hurts all the way up the back and also into my jaw. I went to an orthodontist to see if fixing my bite would correct the jaw problem and he said absolutely not. I didnt even mention to him that I had been in an accident and he told me I must have had trauma to my jaw because the joints are in bad shape. He says I have TMJ disorder. All I really know is that the headaches and neck pain didn't start until the car accident. I hope there will soon be an end to all of this!

I would agree about the accident. This is so awful...are you receiving health care in the US????
I see you are posted as canadachik...wondered about that.....
A lot of the doctors just like to pass out prescriptions like candy. Pathetic!
A physical therapist and a chiropractor can not tell what is going on in there, stay away from them! In fact, if you were in PT after the accident and you had the cyst forming then, PT could have actually did more damage! There is just so much informatin on theinternet regarding syrinx (syringomyelia) take at look into it. I will admit, it all appears very scary. However, if we can manage to get you to a good doctor then that will make a world's difference in you. The only doctor that will be able to help is a Neurosurgeon....the other doctors in Family practice are probably like our own FP, not knowledged in that area so they shuffle you around. You know you have a syrinx and this can lead to very life threatening scenarios and is not something the otehr doctors are taking into consideration. I would ask for an insurance hearing and present your lab findings to them and the NECCESITY to see the appropriate physician!
    Where are you at???
I live in Houston, TEXAS. My son was treated at Texas Children's hospital. Dr. Dauser was EXCELLENT and highly recommended for any other parents that may read this!!) Although he is a Peds Neurosurgeon, I can ask him as to who in your area would be someone he advises to go to....just a thought and it can't hurt.

Re: I don't understand this: someone help please

I live in Ontario (close to Toronto). Our healthcare system is in really bad shape. Like I said before, 25,000 people in this city alone without a family doctor. I looked up syrinx on the net and it DOES look pretty scary. Which symptoms did your son have? I think my left side seems weaker than my right but I don't know if that's from the cyst or not. My left arm is really weak which can be expected I guess because I injured my shoulder in the car accident, but my left leg is really weak as well. The chiropractor I see occasionaly does a muscle testing technique to check for weakness in different areas. He has me stand up and try to lift my big toe while he pushes down on it to test my leg strength, and I can't even do it. He said to me the other day that he was wondering if I had braced my legs when the car crashed and somehow done damage to the left leg. Other than weakness I don't have any troubles with it. One of the possible symptoms of a syrinx is weakness on one side of the body. If that's what's causing this , that is pretty scary!
