    Transverse Myelitis??

    Hi,

Recently experienced strange tingly sensation and numbness down left leg. MRI shows what doc believes to be inflammation on spinal cord which he thinks is Transverse Myelitis but he needs to take spinal fluid to confirm this.

Has anyone else had this experience? Am scared stupid after reading up on it on WWW - why do we do that?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me anything about the condition or about the spinal tap thing - from what I have heard it is a pretty grim procedure even with sedation?

    Thanks,
    Caz

    Re: Transverse Myelitis??

I was recently diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis and without the spinal tap thank goodness It really just means inflammation of the spine as far as I can tell.

I had a MRI that showed a lesion on my cervical spine (C3-4). I'm not sure what your symptoms are but TM symptoms vary quite a bit.... I've read of some people being completely paralyzed and having bowel problems and others like me are only mildly affected. I am fortunate enough that it only affects my right side. I was numb on my upper body (chest, back, arm and hand). My chest and back are no longer numb but my fingers remain so. My neuro prescribed Neurontin to help lessen the discomfort caused by the numbness. I also have the tingling down my leg especially when I touch my chin to my chest (I've heard this is caused Lhermitte's sign). It is only annoying and not painful though.

You are smart to not read up on it because it only leads to confusion (trust me I know lol).

TM is a relief to me since I was told left and right I probably had Multiple Sclerosis. I'm still not off the hook for MS but only time will tell if things progress. The good thing about TM is it is supposed to be a one time occurance especially if your brain MRI is clear.

Well I wish you the best of luck with everything. No matter what, being told you have something wrong with your spine is a roller coaster ride and it is very hard when you have no control over what is happening to your body!

Sending you good vibes. Take care!

    Smile Re: Transverse Myelitis??

I just popped on to this site--usually am on thyroid site. But spinal cord disorders caught my eye, as did your post. My husband was diagnosed twice with multiple sclerosis but we weren't satisfied with the diagnosis; it didn't seem to fit. After 19 months & surgery for what surgeons thought might be a tumor or cyst in central portion of cord, he was found to have a spinal dural arteriovenous malformation. MRI didn't show, because this condition is very rare & in 1992 MRI was pretty new & they didn't know what they were looking at. Transverse myelitis in this case was a symptom of what was really wrong with him. He had surgery which arrested the progression of the disease & left him with some pain & sensory loss but he would have been in a wheelchair within months otherwise. The diagnosis is made by arteriogram. Please rule this out, because it is fixable! Best of luck. Forgive me if you've already explored this.

    Re: Transverse Myelitis??

    Thanks for your responses.
I am pleased to say that after nearly 5 months it is almost back to normal.
I still can't properly feel heat/cold fully on my left leg but it's loads better than before.
The specialist said it may never fully get back to 'normal' but if this is the best then it's livable with.

    Thanks again for your replies.
    All the best,
    Caz

    Re: Transverse Myelitis??

    To Tammy:
Yes! My hubby had a brain MRI & at least 2 thoracic & 1 lumbar spine MRIs. Brain MRI came first as I guess that MS has some characteristics which show up & it helps them to make or rule out this diagnosis (although my understanding is that it isn't perfect--my husband's brain MRI showed "freckles" (spots that they think are not significant) but not "lesions characteristic of demyelinating disease". Then they did thoracic & lumbar MRIs as his symptoms worsened & it became clearer that his symptoms were in spinal cord & not brain. He did have with & without contrast. Only reason no cervical MRI is I think because his symptoms indicated the problem was lower down (it turned out to be at T12-L1).
