Neurontin effect on EMG and nerve conduction study

I am taking 1200mg of Neurontin daily and have an EMG and nerve conduction study scheduled for July 6. Does anyone know if neurontin will affect the results?

No it does not.i too thought that my muscle relaxers and the anti seizure meds that I was taking would somehow affect the tests but was told no as the type of testing done will detect only actual damage or compression.I asked this question of many different medical professionals at one time or another and was always told the same thing.Marcia

The EMG on my neck and right arm is scheduled for July 6. Hopefully it won't be as painful as my EMG in 2003 on my right leg. Frank

Yeah, don't they just suck??The one that I had done on just my arm was painful but quick.the last one I had after my spinal cord surgery was absolute hell. That was done on all extremities and lasted well over an hour and a half.Just load up on your pain meds if you have them and then have someone drive you if possible.Hopefully yours wont take more than like a half an hour.If i remember right, that is about how long just the arm took for me.Let me know how it goes.marcia

    Marcia,

Had the test done today. The drugs had no effect. Unfortunately, very painful experience. Won't know the results until doctor appointment on July 21.

Re: Neurontin effect on EMG and nerve conduction study

The results showed no problem, which has confused the doctor. I have a rupture in the neck, but the pain in my arm is not related. The thing is that my neck hurts far worse and I am hoping for some relief. He is hesitant to do any surgery, as mine is not a classic case.

Just a note and what I have been told when I had my last EMG. They covered me up with a blanket prior to the doctor doing the EMG because they said if I get cold it will effect my results and I also found this on *****:

    How To Prepare

    Tell your doctor if you:

Are taking any medications. Certain medications that act on the nervous system (such as muscle relaxants and anticholinergics) can interfere with electromyography (EMG) results. You may need to stop taking these medications 3 to 6 days prior to having the test.
Have had bleeding problems or are taking medications that thin the blood, such as warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin.
    Have a pacemaker.
You do not need to restrict your food or fluids. Do not smoke for at least 3 hours before the test.

I was on Gabapentin for a month and it did nothing for me, I hope it didn't hurt me. I just recently found out it is one of the more ototoxic drugs.
