    Syrinx

I had 2 MRI's done 2 weeks ago, they diagnosed me with syrinx which is about 2.5cmm.
I was researching over the Internet to find out more about it since my doctor honestly told me he never had patient with this kind of problem.
I have appointment to orthopedic DR this Tuesday but I was wonder if maybe there is someone here who could shed more light about syrinx surgery and what can happened if something will go wrong.
I try to think positive but I have to admit I am very aware this is inside y spinal canal and a lot of things can go wrong.
Right now I am on lortab which helps 100% for my pain but I can't see myself taking lortab for the rest of, my life.
If anyone had syrinx surgery I would appreciate all good and bad about it.
I am waiting for this DR to see what he will decide to do drainage or surgery.
How serious this kind of surgery is?
Please post to question maybe there it will make me feel better.
My syrinx is in lumbar 1 .
My spine x rays come back normal.
    Thanks Eva

Hello. I think I can help.
First, you are wasting your time with an ortho. He/She will send you to a Neurosurgeon as this is an internal spinal cord issue, a cyst on or in the cord. The Ortho works with bones and ligaments.
My son was 12 last year when he had his surgeryat TX Children's Hospital. He had a syrinx from T7-T10 and was causing him to drag one of his legs and lose the feeling in his extremities. TX Children's placed a shunt in his spinal cord and I have to be honest.....it was not a pretty sight and he was in mush discomfort. However, within 1 week, he was writing normally, had the feeling back in his arms and legs and the scoliosis that was caused by the syrinx (Syringomyleia) had lessened his scoliatic curve from 40 to 30 degrees. His walk improved within days. If asked now, he says he would have done it all over again. They really do not know what caused it. He does not Chiari either. He had 5 YES 5 MRI'S last year. His blockage was about 4 inches long and 3 cm in diameter. We had follow ups and the syrinx is so small that his Neurosurgeon has cleared him. It will worsen if not operated on and to the point that you can loose nerve's permanently. So get this looked at ASAP! Let me know if I can assist any further!
