Lightbulb Looking for helpful experience ACDF

    Hi all,

I had an ACDF for C5-6 on 2/15/05, other than extreme tightness in the neck muscles, no more pain in the neck area or radiating down the arm, most of my pain from that was on my left side. However, now I have burning and pain in between my shoulder blades (mostly on the left side) and numbness and tingling (mostly on the right side) in my hands and fingers. At first it was in my thumb and 1st two fingers but today my whole right hand is somewhat numb....not completely, I can still use it but it feels like the blood is being cut off to it. My shoulder blades aren't as sore or tight today. I had a really bad flare up 2 weeks ago after doing minimal activity (going to be doing the same activity tonight) and of course I'm scared of how I'm going to feel tomorrow. Anyway the pain after that was mostly on the right side of my shoulder blade area.

I also have a torn rotator cuff on my left shoulder and while I was seeing my new ortho, he took an x-ray of my neck to make sure my fusion was good....it was. I have an appt with the neck/spine specialist in the same office on 11/21.

Anyone have any ideas based on my short amount of info whether this sounds like another disc problem or just a continuation of the original one.

    Thanks JeanneO

Re: Looking for helpful experience ACDF

I have had ACDF on C5-6 and C6-7. I have also had to have the rotator cuff in both shoulders reattached. When I had the first rotator cuff reattached is when I had the first burning sensation between my shoulders. When I had the other one reattached it got worse but just temporarily. Joining a gym is the best advice I can give you. Get a good trainer to give you a workout strategy for a total body workout that includes weights and cardio. Not for body building but for toning. This is the best thing for the neck. First have the rotator cuff fixed by a SPORTS doctor only. Back to the ACDF. Mine was a great success for the first two years. Numbness and headaches were totally gone. But after the two years the headaches began to come back not with the same intensity at first but after seven years they are gaining in intensity. Here is the sad part. For ruptured or degenertive cervical disc gold standard or fix is ACDF. This virtually guarantees that the disc above and or below will blow out next by transferring the stress from the fused area. There is a better fix for anyone with cervical disc problems than ACDF. It is artificial cervical disc. The problem is the FDA will not move out on them. I understand they are in the trial phase right now. The FDA could sit on this for years and some of us do not have years. Germany and Australia has been implanting artificial cervical disc for five years with a great deal of success. What all people with cervical disc problems needs is a powerful lobbyist to push the FDA and the insurance companies into excepting these medical advances that improve the quality of life and may also cut out or at least down the need for further surgery. Does anyone have any ideas?
