    Question Pain after Spinal Fusion

My husband had spinal fusion, his 4th back surgery,
on L4 and L5 in Feb 2005. He is still having continual
pain in his left leg and lower back. The pain medications
help somewhat, but the side effects are almost worse
then the pain. We are seeking a second opinion with
another neuro-surgeon now, as the pain Dr. he
has been seeing pretty much said he doesn't know what
else he can do. He is only 47, but worked as a ceramic
tile contractor for 15 years, very demanding, physical
labor. Any ideas for pain relief? He is so depressed from
the situation, and doesn't see any hope for feeling
better. We are in Montana, so would love to hear
of any good Doctors, in MT or surrounding states.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

Unhappy Re: Pain after Spinal Fusion

i,m sorry to here about your husband, for his pain if severe ask your doc about duregesic transdermal patches, i was on them and i felt no pain. The down side is that they are addictive and he would have to be leaned off. I have a question for you and your husband i'm out on workers comp after 8 months of working as a ibew electrician and under heavy meds for my pain . The comp doc said i had a pinched nerve at l4 and he was going to do a laminectomy. Now I was seeing 2 other orthropedic surgeons and a pain management specialist with my private insurance because workers comp didnt want to kick in. the first comp doc looked at the 2 sets of mris i had and all the reports saying i should have a 1 level laminectomy with a 3 level fusion, do to ruptured disks. the comp doc said your fine the films look great stay in work full duty and stop taking all meds. months later i finally got workers comp to give me a second opinion but little did i know it was the 1st docs college in the same office what a crock huh.... well im 4 months post laminectomy no fusion comp docs and ajuster are messed up. my back is in so much pain and my left leg is weak. I told the comp doc the sharp pain in my leg went away but my back is chronically in pain every day. he says i cant do anything for you and wanted to send me back to work, but i convinced him i cant do it. when i first hurt myself i only had 1 pinched nerve and one herniated disc but i had to keep working because my wife does not and i have 3 small children so this led to a second disc rupture. I am affraid that if im all doped up on pain meds and go back to work that i will hurt myself more and then the docs cant fix me. I went to my surgeon and he said why did he do a 3 level laminectomy there was no need for that . he sent me for a discogram to see if the fusion he wanted to do before is still the case. i went for the test and l4 l5 were extremely painful i almost jumped off the table positive..... i am so tired of this pain that it is tearing my family apart my wife suffers with my children it affects everyone whos around me ... i feel bad that i cant be me i mean i am 28 years old and never had back problems i feel like an old man, but i am going to have the fusion done by my doc i trust him so much, but workers comp is going to cut me off so ill have to worry about income but do you think i would be able to get like a cashiers job no lifting, would i be able to handle it , i dont know what to do anymore i break done alot but dont let my wife or kids see, i hate it . I really would appreciate any info you can give about recovery and my situation thanks.
