    Myelomalacia ??

Hi, Looking for someone who has had or has this whatever it is. Just got the mri report back and started looking up all the words I dont know. This thing was found between C4-5with hyperintense signal in the posterior margins of the left and right side, along with bone spurs which are creating and early compression of the cervical cord. To much info? :confused. Does this sound formilar to anyone? If so I would love to hear about you. Frankly this has me confused and the more I read the worse it gets, not to mention the scary factor.

sAME HEAR. VERY CONFUSED. AM CHANGING DR. THE END OF JULY BECAUSE THE ONE I AM SEEING RESFUSES TO EXPLAIN ANYTHING TO ME OR TO SEND REPORTS TO MY PCP. KEEPS TELLING ME I WILL BE HAVING SURGERY. i'M NOT SO SURE OF THAT. FROM WHAT I'VE READ MYELOMALACIA WHICH ALSO CAME UP IN MY MRI ALONG WITH BULGED DISKS EVERYWHERE AND BONE SPURS IS THE BEGINNING OF NERVE IMPINGEMENT OR CORD SUPPRESSION. IT'S ALWAYS EXPLAINED DIFFERENTLY BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. THAT'S ALL I KNOW BUT I KEEP SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS. GOOD LUCK.

Yes! The MRI also showed a bulg at c4-5 with spurs creating a compression of the cervical cord. A smaller disk in C5-6 which indents the cervical cord and a smaller bulg at C6-7 but does not contact the vental surface of the cord. ( still learning what the words mean). And just a general narrowing of all the disc spaces from C3 to C7. Also T1 and T2 are showing hemangioma.

I'll keep looking, I have an appointment on Aug 9th with a spinal specailist and hopefully will get more answers, I just want to have an idea what he is talking about prior to the visit so I can get my questions in order.

Thanks so much for responding. I hope you find a better Dr. Are you in a lot of pain? I ask this becouse I seem to have good days and bad days. Bad days last from any where from one day to several.

I wish the best for you!

    Re: Myelomalacia ??

hi mystara!!!! i am actually switching from a spine specialist to a physiatrist. When i was injured this time i hurt my neck, left shoulder, back and rt knee. He seems to be only focused on my neck and ignoring everything else. My lower back and right knee hurt the worse. for a fact i now have a badly swollen right ankle that the dr. put in a brace because of the back and knee pain i keep going over on it and now my ankle is spreained and totally inflamed. Pain in my neck can go from a 3 on a good day to a 10 on a bad. if i sit on the computer too long or try to read without pillows to hold my arms up since i can't let my neck hang down to read i am in intense pain. I don't even want to talk about neck surgery at this point. I am hoping that this pain management dr. will treat everthing with injections and PT and that it'll work. As long as i can do the the everyday things and not be in excruciating pain i can live with it. Can i return to my job? i doubt it. it requires consistant lifting of 50 pounds. that's how i got here.

Hi ICC, Wow you have a mess of injuries, I hope things turn out well. Sounds really painful. From reading the posts I'm hopeing I have a light case. I work in the construction field myself, building Ships for the Navy with a private contractor, thats how I hurt myself as well. I was wondering about returning to work myself. Seems doing anything with my arms without support of them ( holding them out in front of me) is very difficult. My Left arm feels like I'm trying to lift it out of mud. So far only my neck, arms and back are effected. Hope you get well soon or at the least cut down the number of injuries.

    Good Luck to you

    Re: Myelomalacia ??

thanks dear and same to you. feel better soon. that's why i have made the decision not to return to my current job. to much lilfting too many bad body parts. i'm comfortable right now. not alot of pain but that's only because i am taking it real easy and doing nothing my water therapy. all i have to do is walk too much or even sit too long and i 'll have 3 bad days. so i take it light and i seem to be ok. i know what you mean bout the arms. different ways you move them you get different pains. mine are very weak. when i wash my hair i have to drop my left arm in a couple of seconds. no strenght to hold it up.

    Re: Myelomalacia ??

According to my son's dr., this is a very serious condition. It usually only occurs in older people, he is 31 and is scheduled for surgery on the 29th. If nothing is done about it , it can cause loss of control in yuour bladder, it can affect the way you walk. My son is having 3 disks dissected and fused. This is supposed to stop the progression of the disease.

that's what i'm hearing from the ortho and the PM dr. if it progresses it can cause alot of problems you don't want. mine is cervical and since i already have problems with my arms, shoulders and hands form it i will probably have the surgery when they explain what they're doing and when. i feel i have to give PT and injections a try first. i have been in limbo with no treatment since early may so i'm just starting out. i wish your son all the luck for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

    Re: Myelomalacia ??

Apparently my son is past the point of injections and PT. The disease has caused so much damage that the neurologist told him he doesn't even know how he is still walking. Is there anyone here on the board who can give testimony to their results after the surgery? I am terrified for him to have the surgery because it is dangerously close to the spinal cord but as I said he has no choice. I had never heard of this before now. Thank God we found it when we did before it progressed any further! Everyone please pray for him...he is my only child even though he is an adult he is still my baby !!!
