Update on nerve block

What a horrible experence to go thru. The procedure itself besides being suprised by an shock went smoothly. It is the aftermath that is the problem.I got some pain relief until the numbing medicine wore off and it's been downhill since then. By thursday afternoon I was in the emergency room with increased pain and pain in my abdomin. For awhile we thought it was appendicitice. By saturday I could'nt stand the pain anymore and called the guy that did the nerve block and described the pain to him. He said to increase my pain meds. Now i'm taking 3, 20gm of oxycottin and tylox. The pain is better probally because I'm so drugged up. I have new systoms now that was'nt there before. Now my left arm is so weak I can barly use it. There is also a burning feeling going down my arm. The block was given at C5-6. The doc said I probally was'nt going to get long term help from the blocks based on what happened with this one. What he does'nt know is no one will get close to my neck with a needle ever again. He said he believes the pain may be a shoulder problem even though I've already had surgery on it. I think he does'nt know what he's talking about. For the past 5 months everything has been pain starting in my neck, thru my shoulders and down my arms. Not to mention they can see the damage on the MRI in my neck. I have to go see him tomorrow to be sure it's not anything he did that caused this. Like he's going to admit to that anyway. Anyway thanks for letting me whine awile. Hope everyone else's day is going good. TEXASCRITTER

Re: Update on nerve block

This is horrible. I'm so sorry. I have never had one of these, but seem to see 50% have great experiences and about 50% have horrible ones. Hopefully it will pass in a couple days. I was just reading about these on this board today and remember seeing something about the pain completely going away after a few days and improvement in the original symptoms. I hope this is your case. Thinking of you and will say a prayer.

Re: Update on nerve block

Jim,

This is not good. You should be getting relief from pain by now. Worse case should be back to where you were, not more pain.

Can you get back to your original doc and get a referral to someone else to give yo a second opinion on this?

I know your situation is different than most of us (docs and insurance), but I think you should have someone outside of this circle look at you and give an opinion.

Dennis

Re: Update on nerve block

I went back to the guy who gave me the nerve block this morming. He was looking for infection or signs of meningensis which he never mentioned as a possible side effect of nerve blocks. He found nothing wrong. That's what I expected him to say frankly. He has got the idea in his head that this still has something to do with my shoulder even though I can tell the pain orginates in my neck. He does'nt think futher nerve blocks will help so I don't know what is next. He had 4 suggestions for me. Get a MRI of my shoulder where they use dye in the procedure. I don't know what that is called. He also wanted me to see a psychologist. I told him I see a counselor on a regular basis. He says psy is different. I take it mabey he thinks It's in my head. He's close, It's in my neck!!!!! He wants me to follow up with my NS which I have an appointment on the 21st. Lastly he wants me to talk to w/c and see if we can find a doctor on their approved list to handle my meds. He isn't willing to prescribe anything because he does'nt see an end to it. I really don't know what to ask for next. I feel like I should have an update MRI on my neck. I just found out what a milogram was today and that does'nt thrill me at all. I had a spinal tap done a few years ago and it was 2 years before the pain went away in my back from it. I'm thinking I'll just wait and see what my NS suggest this time. It just keeps dragging out and I'm tired and in pain. I always seem to be saying we will see what happens next, but I end up with no results. Any suggestions on what I should do or ask to be done at this stage? I appriciate your answeres. Getting new doctors may not be a possibility with workers comp. They are already unhappy with how many I've had so far. All I know is I'm still in pain and want out of pain. I hope your all having a good day!!!!!!! TEXASCRITTER

Re: Update on nerve block

JimJ, don't take this wrong. Pain can do funny things to us. First is there any reason not to check out the shoulder? The neck and the shoulder can mimick similar symptoms and even though you feel it in the neck - if they keep saying this to you - shouldn't you rule it out? The shoulder can develop those bone spurs just like the neck or other stuff. Second - on one of my injections I did feel worse after, and they decided it was because of the additional pressure of the fluids they injected caused swelling. Third, pain can also mess with our minds, our logic and thinking and also it will try to deal with pain and some people can't effectively - some people have limited response to pain meds after taking them long term and need more and more, it can make it look like a person is out of control. In my experience in my darkest day when I thought we weren't making progress I went back to my Primary Care physician and asked for objective view, advice and help developing an action plan to deal with the specialists. I know you are on workman's comp but maybe this will spark some kind of idea for you. Sorry you feel such a mess.

Re: Update on nerve block

I am trying to get the shoulder checked out too. I figured it could'nt hurt. When I first got injured they did surgery on my shoulder and removed all the bone spurs. The pain never went away but moved or was more noticable in my neck after that. So I don't know what else could be wrong with it. I'll keep you updated. I have to do a new thread for this evenings problem. Thanks for responding.

Re: Update on nerve block

I really do think you do need a new MRI of the neck.. hopefully you can push for one.

Funny thing you mention the shoulder. Originally when my neck acted up I had known for year I had some small herniations but reallly never any neck pain, just soreness now and again.

Well I started having horrific pain in my shoulder. Had an MRI done and some injections that did nothing. I couldn't move my arm and the pain was beyond belief. The only time I ever felt anything so horrible was when my hip was replaced.

All came back fine (xrays and mri) but the pain increased and I lost feeling in some fingers and my arm felt numb so the doctor decided to do a scope on my shoulder. I've had rotator cuff tears and spurs in the past that didn't show on an MRI so he thought this was the problem and wanted to rule this out..

So needless to say I went in and had surgery on my right shoulder. Well guess what.. nothing was wrong other than some minor arthritis and small spurs. The doctor cleaned it up and sent me home thinking this would fix it.

Well bad news, this made things 100 times worse. I was now in so much pain I couldn't sleep or eat. It even hurt to use the restroom, I could't sit on the toilet for a second. We were totally dumfounded (me and the doctor) as to what was happening. My shoulder was fine and then it dawned on both of us at the same time... my neck! I just had surgery for no good reason.

Sure enough they did an MRI of my neck (had to do it twice, I couldn't lay there the whole time the pain was so bad) and several disks were impinging my spinal cord and nerves.. The problem never was my shoulder to begin with.. I just never had any neck pain even though it was my neck.

Anyhow that's my story for the day. As mentioned the shoulder can mimick neck pain and vice versa.

I hope you see light at the end of the tunnel and things get better.

BTW have you gotten a lawyer yet? I really do think you should find a good one, perhaps this will speed up getting the appropriate type of help you need instead of your doctor playing things off like it's nothing major.

all the best
Barb
