    osteoporosis and spinal canal stenosis

My aunt, who is in her 60s, is going to undergo a spinal canal stenosis surgery. She has been suffering from osteoporosis
    over the past few years.

I've heard that there are many causes of spinal canal stenosis,
but I personally suspect that her osteoporosis has something to do with
the development of her spinal problems.
She has been losing bone mass. She's starting to stoop and this caused her spinal problems.

Is there any connection between osteoporosis and the development of
    spinal canal stenosis?

Also, is there anything that she should do
    before and after her operation.
For example, what she should eat, what supplements she need
or how she should exercise (though now it's very difficult for her because of the pain).

    Thank you.

Re: osteoporosis and spinal canal stenosis

There are many causes of stenosis, I don't think I have ever read that osteoporsis (OP) is a direct cause but it contributes to other things going on in the spine/body.

The loss of bone mass can cause spinal fractures and the humping of the back. My motherinlaw had that and she had this procedure where they injected the fractures to shore them up. I forgot what it was called.

Stenosis is either congenital or acquired. Stenosis means narrowing, this narrowing could just be from the curving of the spine from her OP. It is also normal as we age to develop stenosis by bone spur formation and degenerative process of the discs, etc. Most people have this by 60 and some never have symptoms some do.

You didn't specify what surgery she is having, do you know? Any pre-op prep is directed by doctor. It is good to hydrate, sleep well, and eat a protein rich diet in the weeks prior to surgery.
