2 Days after ACDF Surgery - I am home

    Hi, all,

I am home after ACDF surgery C5-6 on Tuesday. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital in part due to pain and fever. The surgery itself went fine - he said there was a lot of bone spurring (osteophyte) which made the surgery last longer than expected (3 hours).

When I woke up in the recovery room, my hand and foot (which had been numb/tingling) felt great. But in the past 2 days, the numbness and tingling are back the same as it was pre-surgery -- I assume due to the swelling.

The big issue for me in the hospital was the POOR pain management. I did have a PCA (morphine pump) after surgery, but I cannot tell you how the nurse made me feel for "using it too much." I didn't get to a regular room until 11:30pm (I had a late surgery) and was vomiting in the recovery room. The damn nurse said I was pressing the button too much - HELLO, I WAS IN PAIN.

The next day at noon, they took the morphine pump away. In its place they gave me 2 percocets. I KNEW that would not be enough. So from noon until 6:30 (when pain management specialists came) I was in very bad pain. I have to say that the pain management people were fantastic. They gave me dilaudid 8-10mg (from 2 mg tried earlier) and MS Contin. If it were up to my surgeon, I would have suffered in pain.

The other thing was that I was glad I had a catheter initially. I didn't have to get up and worry about going. It was really a help to me.

My throat is a bit sore, not too bad. I did battle nausea in the hospital, but kept taking my Zofran prn (had to keep asking for it). I am in a soft collar but don't have to wear it all the time.

My advice for anyone would be to be an advocate for yourself in the hospital or have someone do it for you -- re: pain management, eating needs, PT, etc.

I will keep you all posted. Overall, the pain is more than I expected, but I also feel good physically (like not too weak or too tired). I am not doing much today - just watching TV in bed.

    Take care,
    Lisa

Welcome home. Lisa if you read this I found that if you knock that pain out with the prescribed amount of meds on time, regularly, for the first couple days, you will get it under control fast. You seem to be having same expeirence as I did. I found that if I felt a little better and tried to skip, or take it randomly, pain only came back with a vengence. They had me take regular doses the first week and that did the trick and then I slowly cut back over the following 2 weeks. I had lots of osteophyte drilling and clean up and mostly it was bone pain, not nerve pain or surgery site pain. But by the second week that pain subsided to a very reasonable amount. Watch tv and rest this week, you will feel better in another couple days.
