Heating Pad - electric or microwaveable how soon post ACDF?

    Hi,
I was just wondering how soon I can use a heating pad (either the electric one or one that you microwave) after having ACDF (donor bone, plate, screws- C5-6)? I think it wld help with some of the post op pain and spasms. I won't see the surgeon for 5 more weeks and was wondering if anyone knew the answer here.
    Thanks!
    Lisa

My advice would be to use ice as it wil reduce the swelling. Heat is not good just yet in my opinion. what did the dr tell you to do??

I used heat from day 1, even while still at the hospital. dr. told me to do what made me comfortable. heat on the shoulder blades will help those spasms - at least it did for me.

I used heat, but I didnt put it on my neck AT ALL. I just used the heating pad where my shoulder blades are due to spasms. I am not sure putting heat on such a new "insult" to the body is a great idea. I would think ice would help the neck and heat for the shoulder blades. Why not call them and ask?

    Hello,
I was told to alternate, 10 minutes ice, 20 minutes heat! I can't remember in which order however? The med staff also told me to keep it away from my neck. Just the heat from the shower was all I was suppose to do to my neck. Till my 3 month post-op visit to the Neuro.
    Later,
    Ice

    Again,
I had the jumbo gel pacs from the Pain Doc. They also included the cloth covers. I kept 2 in the freezer, and had 2 for the micro. The microed ones stayed hot a very long time. The fairly heavy cloth cover prevented burning. They got HOT.
I would amuse myself by seeing how big I could get them to puff up, in the micro. Big like a football. I'm proud to say I never blew the door off, but I had to use an oven mitt to retrieve it!
The things that amuse when you are on heavy drugs, and missing body parts!
    Regards,
    Ice

THis is very funny. Thanks for the laugh. I dont see my dr. for another month, and his office is not great on the phone. I think I will start to use a heating pad on my mid to lower back - not on the neck area.

    thanks,
    Lisa
