Neck stiffness, awful pain in shoulder, numbness in arm & hand

I woke up last Thursday with terrible pain in my neck. I couldn't turn my head at all. Went to Dr. & chiropractor. Chiro has helped my neck in that I started being able to turn my head that night, but my right shoulder (right under and to the right of the back of my neck) is hurting so bad I almost can't stand it anymore. And although my right arm, hand & fingers have had some numbness since then, about 3 days ago it got worse. I have totally numb places on my upper right arm and in my fingers. I understand this could be a disk problem in my neck, but I didn't do anything to hurt myself. No accident or anything. Just woke up this way. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about your neck troubles. I think I am not unlike a lot of people on this board - having cervical disc issues - not as a result of any accident or injury that we know of. I had nagging neck pain for a few months...then - WHAM, woke up in the middle of the night and thought I might be dying - the pain was so excruciating. My neurosurgeon gave me some statistic (sorry can't remember exact figures) that the majority of cervical problems he saw were not accident related, just bad genes, aging etc. Hope things get better for you. If it were me, given the crazy troubles I've had, I wouldn't want anybody to manipulate or even PT my neck until everyone knew EXACTLY what the problem was as to avoid any further damage. I would really push my PCP for an MRI to have a look at what is going on. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Hi i sympathise, i started just the same approx 3 years ago, dont want to be a bad omen but i ended up having a c5/6 discectomy to no avail really, i'm not really any different, but i think i was left too long, got nerve damage. Some days its better than others, but it does sound just like disc protrusion or something like, hopefully physio, manipulation might help you. Good luck, stick in there.

I totally agree that you really need an MRI. I went too long without getting one and now my hands are probably going to stay numb even after after ACDF C5-C7 in Jan. The longer you wait, the more the chance of nerve damage. Another thing is that if your muscles are very very tight in your upper body, they can press on nerves and make the numbness. So alot of things can be causing it. It can be neck related or the muscle tightness or other things. Please do not do the chiropractor until you get an MRI. They can do more damage if it IS the neck.

Thank you so much guys for your info and support. This thing is really killing me. Just wanted to say that I'm going for an MRI this afternoon and nothing else is going to be done to me until they have the results. Thanks again guys!

I started out much like you have. That is fantastic that you were able to get the MRI so quickly. Waiting for those things is really stressful and annoying. Let us know, ok?
