Calling all ACDF patients, which side of throat was your incision?

Anyone who has been following this board for a while knows that I had a paralyzed vocal cord as a result of my ACDF surgery. it was performed at one of the top hospitals in the country by head N.S. The complications have been endless.

By chance today I had 2 Drs. as clients today ... One a N.S. the other an ENT!

As I was chartering vessels to them, my surgery came up in conversation.
The Neurosurgeon (who works in one of the top 3 hospitals in country) said my case was unfortunate and uncommon but MUCH MORE LIKELY WITH AN INCISION on the right side of the neck!

The Ear Nose and Throat physician (who treats a patient like me who has had complications from surgery) confirmmed the N.S. statement.

I wonder what side of the neck your incisions have been done on.

I wonder if this is something future patients should question, and make a request to have it done on the left side?

    Your opinions?

    July

Mine is on the right. I had no problems though. I don't exactly know what ACDF stands for though...anterior cervical disc fusion? I had a herniated disck repaired with a metal plate, so hardware I guess you would say, in 2001. No problems recovering from the surgery. My sympathies.

    Hi July
Info that I got from my neurosurgeon on your question:

    1) One of the risks during ACDF is injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls the vocal cords. The injury can be temporary or permanent.

    2) The typical cause of the injury is due to the retraction of the soft tissues necessary to give the surgeon access to the front of the vertebrae. Each patient is different when it comes to the amount of retraction that can be tolerated without injuring the nerve or other soft tissues that must be moved aside.

    3) He preferred to operate from the left side, instead of the right, because the nerve in question is somewhat lower on the left than on the right, and therefore less prone to be injured. That approach makes it more awkward for the surgeon, but worth it since it lessens the risk to this nerve.

I had both of my ACDFs on the left side - my neck is beginning to look like someone is carving notches there, to keep track of the number or surgeries!

Mine was on the left. I never really thought about the placement of it until you asked....I even had to go check in the mirror.

Re: Calling all ACDF patients, which side of throat was your incision?

I had a one level surgery in February. My incision is on the right side, no problems. I also work with a woman who had this surgery a month before I did, and her incision is also on the right side - no problems. I was a little surprised after surgery that my incision was on the right side since all of my pain and numbness was on the left.

Just assumed all ACDFs were done on the left, like mine - duh. Was so surprised to see majority here reporting incision on right side! Have two neighbors with past ACDF, will now have to take a closer look to see which side their scars are on.

Re: Calling all ACDF patients, which side of throat was your incision?

I've had 4 surgeries for 3 fusions. Two have been from the same incision on the right and two from the same on the left. Fortunately the incision on the left is very thin and was done in the line of my neck, therefore less noticeable. The right side, however, was not cut as delicately. That incision (especially after being opened twice) is quite noticeable.

Hi I haven't had mine yet (too much of a baby). However, my NS made it sound like if pain is on left side incision would be on right and vice versa. Maybe that's just his way. I'm so sorry that you're experiencing problems.
