How can two mri's show completely different results?

In 2004 I had a lumbar mri that showed L4 and L5 degenerative disc desease and a couple months ago I had one done again that came back normal. My pain management doctor said tech's sometimes interpret them differently. My lower back is in worse pain than it ever has been and its constant.Tomorrow I will be having a medial nerve branch block on the left side of my lower back. The doc thinks maybe thats where the pain is coming from and sometimes this doesn't show up on an mri.Any input would be very helpful.

Hi, First off, DDD doesn't go away by itself so the radiologist who read the 1st one could have been wrong or he was right and the second one is wrong. In any event, have your surgeon read your FILMS...that will tell you the truth.
Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon

Your Dr. is right about the interpretation. When I injured my back, my surgeon said he won't even take the notes. He insists on looking at and interpreting the films himself. He told me that is why the report says interpretation, it is just that. (His words..not mine) The last time that there was a difference between the technition's interpretation and my Drs., the report said that there could be an infection and that it should be looked at and treated. The Dr. looked and felt my back, where it was hurting, and he said that if I had an infection, I would have had a feaver, there would have been more swelling and it would have gotten worse rather than staying the same. He told me that I should wait till I see him, to read the reports, because it could end up getting me nervous for no reason.

Anyway, trust the Dr. and not neccesarilly the reports inteprtations.

    Good luck.

Yes Mary they were done in two different offices. The one in 2004 where it showed DDD was inside the hospital. This last one in a complete new building across from the hospital where I was told the machines were stronger.I think I am going to call the doctors office and see if he even got a chance to look at the films that were done in 2004.I had the report on paper but sent it to my lawyer. They were suppose to make me copies but never did and send them back to me for my records.I shoulds have known better and made my own copies before I sent themMaybe I need to give him a call too. This morning I woke up with my pain clear up from my neck all the way down to my pelvic bone.It was an effort just getting out of bed.Plus my right shoulder and arm pain,I can't explain why thats happening.Thank you for your comments and support.

Re: How can two mri's show completely different results?

My Orthopedic Specialist reads all the reports and uses the written report only as a reference point. Very often it is how the radiologist interprets the report and I skilled Orthopedic surgeon will interpret the actual films completely different. That is why my surgeon (both times) for my lumbar spine issues and my cervical spine injury had me bring the FILMS in on my first visit, so he could read and interpret the films.

Also, usually when you're having an injection of any kind the specialist that will be giving you the injection will look at the actual films and NOT just read the radiologist report.

I hope the nerve block offers relief from the pain you're experiencing.

I had the same thing happen to me. I had an MRI done and was told by my neuro that I had MS and brain inflammation..had another done later at another place and another doctor, which indicated "nothing"? go figure....what a nightmare..

Re: How can two mri's show completely different results?

Thanks for the reply rachelle01,This whole LS MRI thing is so confusing.I do have the films for 2004,2005 and the latest one taken in Nov 07'.I decided If maybe my spine specialist and pain management doctor could compare all of them then maybe that will clear up things.I sure hope they can because until I get some clear answers I'm afraid I will be dealing with this constant day to day pain.I made a big mistake going to get groceries today because now I'm aching from my head to my toes.We were out of just about everything and my hubby usually gets most of what we need. Now here I sit with the heating pad on my back and I just took a Vicodin.I hope your doctors find out whats going on with you.Its bad enough dealing with the pain and not knowing for sure what to do about it.
