Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after ACDF?

Hi,
I had ACDF C5-6 almost 1 yr ago. I have some permanent nerve damage, like mild numbness, weakness in my left hand. Now, for the first time in my life, I have what I think is carpal tunnel syndrome. My left WRIST hurts SO badly. I am in a ton of pain I can't even believe it. It has been happening for about the past month on and off. I just made an appointment with a hand specialist but I could not get in until the end of April.
Has anyone dealt with this before? Is it related to my spine issues? I do have small herniations at C4-5 and C6-7, but I don't have many neck symptoms at the moment. THe pain is sharp, sharp pain in my wrist and going up my forearm.

Thanks!
Lisa

Hi Lisa
Before my first ACDF I had pain like you describe in my hand, and also my elbow. In fact I was getting injections for 'tennis elbow' the summer before my neck problem finally got diagnosed.

I had some nerve conductivity tests done back then - to see if my problem was in the wrist, or elbow, or elsewhere. Those tests showed everything OK in my arm and hand, and helped diagnose that the problem was in my neck.

You might consider having these tests done - pehaps give you some insight while waiting for the hand specialist appointment. Waiting for these appointments is one of the most aggravating things, when we are have issues 'now'!

I agree with Bobm. I had issues at C4-7 and had significant wrist and forearm pain. After correction and relief of my nerve root impingmenets I still get wrist and forearm pain and spasms from daily activity.

Get an EMG to try to rule out where the issue is coming from. FYI my neck never hurt at any time before my surgeries. Just because your neck doesn't hurt doesn't mean that it isn't coming from your neck!

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after ACDF?

Hi Lisa,
I'm new here and new to dx w/ my spinal issues, but actually have something I can share regarding your question. I have carpal tunnel in both hands as well as problems (numbness, tingling/prickling, weakness, & 'jolts' that shoot through) in my fingers, hands, and arm due to my cervical stenosis and DDD (and arthritis in my fingers, separate from the neck problems). You may have developed CT separate from your neck issues -or not. There's a test (it's not a fun test to have, just so you know) you can have to see if you have CT. If I remember correctly it was called an EMG. I really hated this test, but it found the CT. I had steroid injections for my CT 2 yrs ago (none since), have braces for both wrists that I wear when things 'act up' (continuously day and night if it's bad, but it hasn't been as bad as it was before injections since I had them), and I changed how I do things (and how much). I use to take meds for it, then stopped, now take meds for my spine anyway (am trying to wean fully off meds, though). I don't think my carpal came first, but was dx first. I haven't had surgery yet, so it is not related to surgery, just came about anyway. I don't know if that helps any, but I hope it does.
Take care,
Meghan
