    stef814: Tarlov Cyst

Hi - I just saw your posts since I was searching for message boards related to Tarlov cysts. I've been a member of this board for several years and found great help on it. But now I've got a new diagnosis of Tarlov cysts and have begun looking into this disorder more. I am currently using a TENS unit for the pain (my cysts are located on S1 & S2, don't know the size of them) according to my MRI report, and I will be seeing a pain management specialist on Sept. 5th. NSAIDs and muscle relaxers have done little to help. I sit at a desk a lot for my job, and this is getting extremely painful for me; standing and walking aren't much better. Laying on my side is the best. Can't do that at work however......lol.

How are you all doing since you posted several months ago? Has anyone had surgery? Would you recommend it? What conservative treatment approaches do you recommend? Any narcotics that work better than NSAIDs? Thanks for you help!

Hi Katie - sorry you are having symptoms from your Tarlov cysts too.
Mine are really causing me troubles this month. I use Darvocet for the pain (after I'm home from work) & it helps, but lately not enough. I don't want to go to anything stronger, so I plan to see if I'm a candidate for a nerve block or any type of injections.

If I had a crystal ball and knew the surgery would be safe and that I'd come out feeling better, then I'd try it in a heartbeat... but I'm way too scared to even begin to consider it at this point.

Does the TENS unit help you?

    Hope you feel better soon.

    Re: stef814: Tarlov Cyst

Hi Lilly - thanks for your kind words. I'm kind of disappointed...I saw a pain specialist last Friday for a consultation and he spent all of 15 minutes with me and was more focused on my fibromyalgia than the Tarlov cysts, even though I told him repeatedly that the FM pain is something I've dealt with for years (at least 15 years) and the back pain in my sacral region is NEW. But he just brushed off the Tarlov cyst issue (as many drs do) and said that they aren't usually symtomatic unless compressing nerves.....WELL DUH....that's what my problem is!!!!

Anyhow, long story short...he's going to start me on Lyrica for my FM even though I'm already on a "cocktail" of other meds already, and I really don't want to have to take more meds, but I'll give it a try. And then on Sept. 5, I'll be getting injections in my lumbar region because I do have arthritis of the facet joints bilaterally and he thinks that will "cure" my pain....we'll see. If it doesn't work, I'm going to demand that he take a look at my MRI and see how big the cysts really are because the radiologist didn't state the size of them, only that they are present.

And yes, the TENS unit helps some.....I wear it for an hour and will usually get about 2 hrs of pain relief. It's just a hassle to have to take it to work and put it on, but after sitting at my computer for several hrs I'll do anything to relieve the pain.

Keep me posted on how you're doing....you're in my thoughts and prayers

    Katie
