    Coughing and Belching

I am feeling well since my C6/7 ACDF 5 days ago.

However, I developed quite a bad cough in the hospital and I am worried that the violence of the coughing could dislodge the cage (I think it was plastic with bone morphogenic protein?). I am not wearing any collar or anything. Any advice appreciated.

Also, I have had indigestion problems before the surgery but now my oesophagus is really irritated and I am constantly belching. Did this happen anyone else post surgery and did it go on for long? I feel very unladylike!

    Re: Coughing and Belching

I had quite a bit of trachial/bronchial irritation after my ACDF. When they do an ACDF they push the windpipe aside and that, in combination with the tube they use to intubate you during surgery, can cause some irritation. My doctor said I should use cepacol lozenges and/or cough drops as needed. If it continues you may want to call your doctor to get a prescription cough suppressant. I don't know if you could dislodge the cage but I can imagine that it would be painful to cough so soon after ACDF (especially without a collar - I hated that thing but am so glad I used it).
