    TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

Hello again people. I have an appointement next week with my ear nose and throat doctor. I'm not sure why but some people in this forum said that Whiplash can cause TMJ??. None of the doctors I've seen suspected or gave me a referal to see an ear, nose and throat doctor.

Thanks to this board, the appointment is next week.

My symptoms: chronic neck pain all over the neck, localized left neck pain plus ear pain but that's only on the left size.

My question is: do all ear, nose and throat doctors know what is TMJ?. When I told my primary care doctor my ear hurts he checked for infection? and said I don't have infection. So I bet he doesn't know about it.

Does TMJ can cause neck pain??. I feel ear pain and it's like streching from there with a muscle to my throat, so my throat also hurt. Rarely my chin hurts but that's rarely. chin pain doesn't bother me, it's the horrible neck pain that make it SO hard to live like that.
and there is also a severe pressure underneath my ear that makes my life unbearable.

how do they check if I have TMJ?. Do they have special ways to check TMJ?

Hope to hear from you guys. thanks, appreciate.

Re: TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

    Hi nochange,

Just want to add something about TMJ; I went to a specialist for this about 6 years ago for severe jaw joint pain, one year after an accident. He did alot of looking and measuring and was satisfied with his ruler, I didn't have TMJ. What I know now is that you can have TMJ from whiplash because there is a disc, in the jaw, among other things, that can become displaced and this will not 'measure' yet you have many pain symptoms. An underlying issue before the accident you may not have been aware of can trigger touble.

I also have severe cervical spine issues and the combination feels lethal starting mid-day and on; feels like one big ball of pain from front jaw, throat, to back of neck and up (skull) and down (shoulder) from there. I empathize with you and your situation and suggest you really dig deep if you suspect TMJ as it worsened quickly for me and creates additional problems you don't need.

Hope you find some answers and relief,
    choc

Re: TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

hey choc, just returned from my primary care doctor. He checked my TMJ joint? and asked me if it hurts. First time he pressed there it didn't hurt, second time it did hurt a bit and right away gave me a weird/odd headache in the left side of my head. Is there anybody here who had the same reaction??

He gave me a referal to a specialist to check this out. I'm really SCARED now.

What treatments they gave you for that??. are there treatments that are risky for tmj??

I know choc, the combination is lethal.

can you sleep at night with all this neck pain if you don't mind telling me? it pretty much keeps me awake at night. to be really honest with you I don't really have a life. I take sleeping pills but it only let me sleep like 2-3 hours a night but now my doctor added to it percocet so I sleep a little more.

Hope to hear from you choc or from anybody here with tmj.

    thank you

Re: TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

    Hi nochange,

I have a 'no touch' dr so imagine where you might be with that. I was able to learn through the experience of others on the TMJ board and some over there suffer from neck pain also. Maybe they can help you when you find out what kind of treatment you will be offered. There are also posts there about alternative therapies.

I take meds to sleep but they haven't been too effective lately. I hope to have a team of dr's for pain management to assist with this problem. I have other health/aging issues so a rotating list of reasons not to sleep. I have to rest occasionally during the day to get the load off my neck so this helps with the resulting fatigue.

So don't be afraid to ask lots of questions when you get to that specialist so you have a clear picture of how all those nerves are affected in your jaw, neck and throat area with pains into your head.

Also noticed one of your other posts and a good friend should understand if you have health issues to deal with the same way you would understand and be compassionate with her. I do try not to make these horrible issues the focal point of my life, in other words, I make a huge effort not to talk about it unless absolutely necessary, keeping it brief as possible with any positive updates, and moving on to something that is far more interesting and encouraging for both of you like you usually do. I know it's difficult when it's in your face 24/7 but I do know my endless rambling on about it (in between crippling spasms that do take over occasionally) can test even the most sympathetic individual. Hey, isn't that what these boards are for?

Take care and hope you can find some satisfying answers and relief,
    choc

Re: TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

I have had TMJ for many yrs. I never realized I had it till it was pointed out to me by my dentist. I was wearing my back teeth down by grinding & clecnching. Now my teeth are chipped & wore down in the back. At the time I never realized I was doing this. This is how I react to stress or pain, I clench. I can feel my jaw click or pop now when I open my mouth, but for many yrs this was not the case. Its extremely painful when it becomes this severe. Yes this can cause neck pain & ear pain. There are days I can barely open my mouth to eat & it can trigger awful headaches.

You have pain in your ear, throat & neck & no doctor is giving you an answer as to why. So you have to start some where. Even if its not TMJ you have ruled it out & perhaps this doctor can give you some suggestions as to what else can be causing your pain & problems. Better then sitting there doing nothing & worrying. There is nothing worse then not knowing. I take a muscle relaxer & this also helps me sleep if Im lucky. For the most part if I miss the muscle relaxer I wake up in more pain.
If by chance you do have TMJ there are things that can be tried to help with the pain & symptoms. First lets wait & see what this new doctor says.
I truely hope he can help you out. As I said if its not TMJ he may be able to give you some suggestions. I would definantly ask his or her opinion on what else could be causing these types of problems. Try not to worry, that wont accomplish anything but may add to your existing pain. I know easier said then done. Good luck, Sammy

Re: TMJ and Chronic Neck Pain

Hi there, I read your board and have had neck pain from arthritis and dengerative disc disease......and yes it pushes up on the face from the neck into the jaw. It hurts so bad. Its hard to chew any food, and sometimes my ear hurts so bad like its an infection. Few bits of help, NO GUM! when you go to sleep you must tell yourself do not grind your teeth. I didn't think I did, but I must, my teeth are ground down! A hot compress on your face in the painful area....anti imflammatory, motrin gel helps. Good luck, its very painful, and honestly the shots I have had in my neck help only so much. The only other option is steroids, which do help, but bad side effects.
