First Time ACDF C4/5 - Questions

    Hi everybody,

First post and id like to say Hello and thanks for all the information people have posted up here.

Ok, in Nov im due ACDF at C4/5 due to a prolapsed disk narrowing the nerve root canal on the right side. This is impinging the nerve root

Firstly i have to state my symptoms are not drastic, i have pain like constant achy, crampy sensation behind my right scapula and i get numbness and tingling down my arm...but this is only brought on if my arm is outstretched.

Iv ploughed through the first 26 pages of this forum topic and not found any posts which are solely relevant to C4/5 so i was wondering if anybody out there has had symptoms and surgery on that single level that may be able to provide information or advice as to what i should expect post op.

Obviously everybody reacts differently to their individual case so i know its far from gospel....but i just wondered:

    1) What symptoms have others suffered as a result of a prolapse and nerve root impngment at this level?

    2) If, considering my symptoms do not generally affect my quality of life pre-op, what affects i am likely to suffer post-op?

    3) How long was the recovery period?

    4) Any ill affects as a result of the operation?

By reading through this forum iv noticed many cases of C5/6 or lower however single prolapses at C4/5 seem rare and so any information would be greatly greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Stu

Re: First Time ACDF C4/5 - Questions

    hi there!
this is my first time on here. i had ACDF c4 c5 c6 3 weeks ago. i thought i'd pulled a muscle in my shoulder/neck, had an MRI and discovered that c4c5 was 30% out and C5c6 was 70% out! had surgery at Kings london. I'm currently in as much pain as i was before the op, with the added bonus of dizziness, feeling sick and a mutilated neck! apparently i have spinal shock, and its early days so everyone tells me! pain killers allow me to sleep 5 hrs a night, but i though ti'd be better than this by now.i feel slightly brain damaged due to the swelling of the much compressed cord. I have two carbon cages implanted filled with artificial bone(crushed up sea coral!) i've always wanted to go to australia and now it seems, its come to me!! I have no energy at all, and would really like to feel like me again!I'd like to talk to anyone who might feel the same, or who HAS felt the same! i know that i'm in the minority for being in the UK, but hey! someone has to be!! susie.

smpearce22, I've never done ACDF so I really don't know what to answer you.

Dear Susie...I'm wondering what pain meds are you taking?. Let us know.

    1) What symptoms have others suffered as a result of a prolapse and nerve root impingement at this level? You can compare your cervical level of findings to the associated dermatome. Each level of the spine has an accompanying dermatome (area of the body/skin) that is affected. So I had C6-C7 primarily and that matched the dermatome - most of my symptoms traveled down my arm to my middle and pointer finger. So do some checking on cervical dermatomes.

    2) If, considering my symptoms do not generally affect my quality of life pre-op, what affects i am likely to suffer post-op? If you have any pain and any numbness/tingling - then it is affecting your quality of life now, and in the future. With an ACDF you should have an alleviation of the symptoms you are having.

    3) How long was the recovery period? For a one level fusion the initial recovery period is a few weeks - depending on if you have a brace to wear after, etc. It takes 6 months to a year for a total fusion. But I had a two level fusion and was back to work at 6 wks

    4) Any ill affects as a result of the operation? I had a scratchy throat for 2 days but that was about it. Not much in the way of post-op pain.
