    neck surgery

    Hi,
I need info on my condition, I had surgery to remove a bone spur on 9/22/00. I was diagnosed with herniated discs also but since the pain was worse and the spur got bigger that was first. However after physical therapy the pain was getting worse and I have very limited movement. My Dr. then said it is due to the discs and referred me to a Orthopedic surgeon. I had another MRI which shows damage C4&5 milder in 6&7, he recommended steroid injections which I did, didn't work, then accupuncture. I went for 8 sessions and seemed to feel worse after so I have stopped. The next step is surgery and I am going for 2nd & 3rd opinions also but I see on the board that some of you have seen Nuerosurgeons. Should I also see one? I have sharp sudden pain in my rgt arm, pain underneath, pain in forearm and hand, neck pain, back spasms, cracking of joints and now it seems to be going to my left arm and shoulder. I have a lot of pain in my shoulder(feels like its out of socket) advice to better sleeping position to those who asked, use a large pillow to hold up your arm,I sleep on my left side with the pillow in front of me.I was told that I get that pain because I have lost muscle tone.) I have had this pain in various ways for about 5 yrs. I first went to a nuerologist and he did not even do an Xray and suggested taking some pills for the rest of my life, needless to say I didn't and I did not go back. The surgeon suggested (forgive spelling) lymenectomy and or disckectomy
but he is very conservative and does not want to do it until I have tried everything else. I have been taking percocet since September. Would appreciate any info, sorry for such a long story.
    Sincerely,
    Magda

    Re: neck surgery

Hi Magda, I seem to have been in the same situation as you are. Saw many doctors and a couple of neurosurgeons. Exhausted everything short of surgery and finally had 2 level disc surgery on Jan. 22. I also live on long Island. I used an Orthopedic Spine surgeon who came very highly recommended by many people (including a physician who is a close family member). The surgery has helped but has not taken away all of my pain. In fact the last couple of weeks it seems that the pain is coming back. But still, nothing like what I had before the surgery. I have the mobility back in my neck that I had lost and have stopped dropping things which was of the biggest concern to all doctors involved. Though I used a Ortho Spine doc, there still is a neurosurgeon assisting in surgery. Hope this helps a little bit. Hang in there and do what you think is best for you.

    Re: neck surgery

    Hi Susan,
Thanks for your reply, as I said I'll be seeing two other Doctors this week and also my Ortho.Surgeon so maybe we'll decide what to do at that meeting. Yesterday was pretty good pain wise but today is not so great but not as bad as Sunday. Did your Dr.tell you that if you had the problem a long time and had surgery sometimes it does not help because of nerve damage or the brain remembers the pain and keeps right on sending those signals even after the operation is done and the problem seems to be fixed? That is the reason for my 2nd and 3rd opinions to see if I'm a surgical candidate.

    Re: neck surgery

It seems we can start our own little cerically herniated on long island club here. :-)

I have sen a lot of doctors here in Nassau, but for neurosurgeons I am sticking with manhattan. NYU and Mt. Sinai, namely.

One said injections or cutting bone, wanted more x-rays and a cat scan, the other said fusion or cutting bone.

It has been three years, and I have tried everything else, so I am ready. But the injections didnt sound too promsing, and certainly bot a permanent option for someone 23. I am tempted to try the cutting, and get the fusion should it not work. Sounds like minor surgery, one day in and out.

Noone spoke of a disckectomy, but maybe thats because my main problem is arm/neck pain steming from nerve impingement... the actual spinal compression stops at the fluid... There is no fluid barrier anymore, but it isnt really pressing on my cord.

What a relief to hear of cervical herniations.. it seems most sites pretend they dont exist. I even had a medical site define herniated discs as impingements that cause leg pain and sciatica.

Anyway, if anyone wants to exchange doctor names.. I am in love w/ my neurologist, Dr Soni in Plainview, and my chiropractor, Dr. Murphy in Farmingdale. I have even been to an awful neurologist in southern nassau who said he never prescribes painkillers to chronic patients! I think that is unethical.

I am seing Dr. Perin of Mt. Sinai, and Dr. Babu of NYU.. if you have experience with anyone in Manhattan/Queens/Nassau I would love to hear it. Afetr 3 years I am finally ready for a real solution (and EMPLOYMENT!!!) This happened to me during college, and while I managed to scrape out the end of my BA, I have done NOTHING with it.

    Re: neck surgery

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have a Spine Surgeon named Thomas Mauri in Manhasset, 1000 No. Blvd (516) 829-6260. Although he is very conservative about surgery he does not rule it out. He has recommended Dr. Jason Lipetz at 810 Merrick Ave.in East Meadow(516) 393-8941 Center for Spine Rehabilitation, for therapuedic blocks that pinpoint where the problem is exactly, he's great and so is his nurse Barbara. This is my last resort, I have tried everything else, the steroid shots to the spine, 2sessions),physical therapy and accupuncture.

    Re: neck surgery

I exausted all routes before breaking down and having surgery but in the end i had to stabalize my neck....there is no right or wrong answer on this one ! but i say do all conservative things as long as ya can!!then just make sure the surgeon is a good one who has done many of your type surgery ( ortho spine 'trained in spine specifically' surgeon is preferable) good luck and you will be fien there are many of us trust me!! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
