Spinal Fusion and Hip Pain

My husband had spinal fusion surgery (L4 & 5) almost 3 years ago. They used the pelvic bone as a host site for bone graft material. They say the pelvic bone takes the longest for pain to go away. He still has severe pain in pelvic area and it is increasing in intensity. It appears this is common - has anyone else had success in ridding themselves of this pain. They now have a TNS unit on him as of today. I might add that the fusion was a success but it did put pressure on the L2 & 3 area which they had to go in and clean up recently around the nerves. Any info is much appreciated.

Re: Spinal Fusion and Hip Pain

Hi; Can't help you, but have a question. I had L234 fused and bone taken from my hip. Ten years ago- - no pain. How did your husband know that other discs were problems? What were the symptoms that led him going back to get more surgery? I'm having a leg problem and docs say it is not from my initial surgery. Your comments appreciated. Thanks, johnmichael

Hi "johnmichael". Well - it makes sense when they fuse you have a solid piece and no flexibility. Gene has beat his spine to death for years. He started having serious pain down one leg and numbness and tingling in the foot. It got pretty intense and he's a ladder guy so it got dangerous also. Guess it really isn't connected to the original fusion - just put pressure on the upper lumbar area. If your Dr. says that isn't what it is I would consider another opinion. Fusion Dr. was a neurologist and was on another planet - couldn't communicate with him. This Dr. is an orthopedic Dr. - is very honest and open and interested in what we have to say and what we want to do. Even with all the tests, MRI, etc. the whole thing with the spine is a guessing game - my opinion - nothing is a sure thing. Good luck and thanks for asking.

Re: Spinal Fusion and Hip Pain

hi, i also had cervical fusion with bone graft from the hip, i hate to say this but the pain in the hip never goes away, mine was 5 years ago and it still hurts, incredable huh. Well i also worked for an orthopedic surgeon for many many years, and he informed me that unfortunately this is one of the drawbacks of using your bone for graft, as opposed to using donor bone. I had virtually no pain in my neck after fusion, but was in such agony after the hip graft, my brother in law who is also a dr, warned me before the surgury that this is the worst pain you can ever experience from any surgury, and that it will hurt me for the rest of my life, i also have a disease called syringomyelia which effects the spinal cord, but this hip pain is awful, cant lye on it for more than 20 minutes or pain is unbearable, even when i shower and go over it with my scrubbie it hurts, so unfortunately this is what we have to live with after fusion surgury with your own bone graft, what does help is aleve, or motrin, it doesn't take it away completely but does help.
[this message has been edited by moderator3 (edited 12-16-2001).]
