Assistance for throat problems after ACDF

I have read numerous posts on here where people had extreme difficulty swallowing after having ACDF. If you are having this procedure - here is the advice my doctor gave me before I had mine. Immediately following surgery, as soon as you can - drink something hot (coffee or tea -- but not TOO hot). Then follow that with something cold. Keep drinking a cold beverage for as long as you can - remember to only take small sips thru a straw. IF you continue to have problems, my doc recommended Cepacol(?) or Sucrets - the throat lozenges that numb your throat. He said that will help you recover a lot faster.

Michael, I thought of trying lozenges and perhaps should have. I would think Chloraseptic would also work well as it numbs the throat more than Sucrets.
Problem was, when I would think of it I was home alone and couldn't drive <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">

As for drinking cold liquids, the only thing I could get down without too much struggle those first days was water, and I'd get cold water from our cooler and still gag. Water at room temperature was the easiest thing for me to drink but even that was tough for a few weeks.

Glad to report that the coughing/gagging is now rare. It sure makes eating and drinking more pleasant!
