    Chiropractic Manipulation after ACDF

    Hello all,

Has anyone had chiropratic manipulation after ACDF? My chiro is very good. He recommended I get an MRI while my family doc just sent me to PT. He also recommended I see a neurosurgeon after he looked at the MRI. So, he's not one of those chiros who promise to cure you in 30 visits.

My chiro said he can do manipulation after the neurosurgeon gives the OK. He said if I don't want my neck done he won't do it.

So, has anyone had manipulation to their neck? Does it feel different? I'm worried about messing up the surgery, even if my NS gives the go-ahead.

    Thanks!

NO CHRIO MANIPULATION AT ALL!!! Actually I would not even go to a Chrio. 2 yrs ago, I felt the Chrio was God, I LOVED him. Now I am trying to sue him. I really beleive he is the reason my discs herinated!! ALL the DTRS I have spoken to say Chrio is good for some things, but not the neck ESPECIALLY after Surgery. I am not expert, but have been suffering for a good amount of time and am 5 weeks Post Op from the ACDF with 2 discs involved, so I do know a littl bit. I cant beleive your Neuro even TOLD you Chrio was OK after Surgery. I would do more research on that!! Its sounds way to scary to me. Lori

Hey Adele, I just read your post to Mothmin, I am reading this right, You just had your surgery last week?? Or was that last October?? I am blown away, I had mine 5 weeks ago, I had what you has C5&6 C6&7 using my own bone (difference) and plate with screw, There were no complications, there was no trauma, or nerve damge (YET) I am 39 , In excellent shape and health , a total health freak, very physically active, dont smoke, and Dtr said Surgery was a Major success. he also told me 6-8 weeks in the neck brace no MATTER what, no driving and NO ACTIVITY the first 2 weeks, I laid in bed at my Moms house for 2 1/2 weeks and only got up to eat and go to bathroom and take a bath The only time I take the brace off is for 5-10 minutes a day to relax in Tub. I still bascially do nothing, I tried to do some light housw eork and stuff and wound up back in pain, then I laid on couch for a weeks again, felt a little better, did some light stuff in house, do some light stretching and WALKING (not jogging) and BAM!! was in pain again all weekend, today is seems to be letting up a bit again. If your surgery was only a week ago and you had Double ACDF like me you must be one seriously quick healer or else your DTR is Amazing!!!!!! I still have pain in my arm an hand to. What gives?? Who was your miracale DTR?? I am dying to talk to you!!!!!!! Lori

Don't worry, I can't imagine any neuro giving permission for neck manipulation...

Whoops! I implied my neuro would OK neck manipulation. Actually, all I know is he has no problems with chiropractors, which is one of the many reasons why I went to him.

My chiro is the one who told me he can do neck manipulation after ACDF. I haven't asked the neuro yet. I just wanted to get some opinions before I ask him.

Lori -- my neuro's name is G.W. Schoenhals. He's part of the team at the Oklahoma Neuroscience Institute in OKC.

Well trip out niteowl, I just read your post about reletives in oxnard and ojai. Well funny thing is I'm from Holdenville Oklahoma, and have about 200 relatives there! I went to 3 different chiros before going to neuro. I had some luck with one of them...but not for the problem i went in for, although he did get rid of that lump in the throat thing, I don't think I'd have the guts to try it after surgery although I want to ask my neuro about the stretches I did at pt, which did wonders, removed ALL my pains. good luck...goooooooo Sooners!

    Niteowl,

May I ask why you are even considering using a Chiro after sugery ( Was it OCT, this year????) as I am very confused.

In answer to your question, DO NOT let a Chiro near your neck, there are very delicate bones within your neck attached to muscles I didn't know exsisted which in turn are attached to each level of your neck.
I can not even imagine why a Chiro would want to go near your neck after having fusion, not unless he doesn't regard your wellbeing nor future health and just wants the $...

I can assure you my Nero-Surgon would go balistic if I even asked about the possibility.

Hey Davy I got a chuckle out of what you said. My Nuero would go balistic if I went any where near a Chrio as well. Like I said before, I was a BIG Chrio beleiver, I mean come on I am Little Miss New Age and all that, but after this whole ordeal, it will be a cold day in hell before I go to one. I am not totally trashing them, I think they can benefit SOME people, and God know they are nice enough, But like you said,WHY would you let any one touch your neck after surgery, any Nuero who says its ok is a crack pot for sure!! I am starting to feel pretty good. I just have pain at night now, and it is tolerablet, no PILLSS!! I have not been over doing it, hard to beleive, but no stretches or running down stairs or lifting at all. I did drive yesterday,(I am still in collar) but just a very short distance into town and very slowly. I am Five weeks down. 2 more weeks in the Neck Brace. I am getting excited!!! XXX Lori

    Re: Chiropractic Manipulation after ACDF

Hi Davy, Lori, Debbie, and Mothmin!

Yes, it was 2002 -- I've updated my profile...

I wasn't considering manipulation NOW. I just wanted to ask the question while it's on my mind. You've all given me some good advice.

I'm lucky to have a good chiro who's not out for $$$. In fact, my chiro benefits ran out in September, and he charged only the $15 copay between then and the surgery!

When I wasn't getting any relief, my chiro is the one who ordered an MRI. My family doc wouldn't order one and wanted me to go for more PT, without really knowing what was causing the pain! He sent me for PT last year, which gave me minimal relief. So in my case, hooray for chiros!

Again, my chiro said he can adjust the neck after ACDF, but if I don't want it, he'll stay away from that area. I still plan on seeing him for my sciatica -- his treatments give me much relief down there!

Maybe muscle stimulation would be OK, but again, not unless the neuro says it's OK. My neuro did tell me to stop using my percussive massager until he says it's OK to resume using it, so he's not against percussive massagers.

Davy, did I read right that you had NO collar? I'm glad my doc told me I could take off the collar when I'm not active, but sometimes my neck feels fatigued and the collar actually feels good! Do you get your strong neck muscles from weightlifting (or perhaps, tossing the caber?)

Hi Adele, Like I said I think that Chrios are the nicest people on earth, so kind, so caring and they really are, but i dont think they should be snapping and cracking. They ALL say they are not in it for the $$ I went to Chrios for years for pain in my neck, till it finally ruptured!! I had no insurance on a couple of occassions due to job changes with my Husand ETC.. And they would only charge me $10 a visit AND throw in a free-be as well. I still would not let one touch my neck especailly after surgery. I beleive they can help with Siactica, with GENTLE manuevers, but not cracking!!! Keep us up dated!! Id love to her what your Nuero says!!! Lori
