Surgery six days later cruise..can I do it????

Finally my doctor (New doctor) has decided nothing is going to help me but surgery. Herniated disk C5-C6 pressing nerve that is making my right arm numb and tingling and now left arm, too. He said that the numbness is just going to get worse. Tried epidural shots. Did not help. the problem is this.... I have had a cruise planned and paid for since last March. Did not cancel it because until yesterday I did not know I was having surgery. Now Surgery is Sept. 16 and cruise is Sept 23 thru 28. He is using a piece of bone from my hip. I have a 6 hour car ride to get to Ship. CAN I DO IT??? What do you all think. There are 3 other ladies going and we were sooo looking forward to this "girls" trip. I don't want to ruin it for them. Can I just lay around the ship? Thanks for your help. Cherri P.S. Cannot put off surgery because it is Workers comp.

    Cherri,

My first question-did you buy travel insurance? I sure hope so. I didn't have bone taken from my hip, but I don't think you would get your money's worth out of this, even if the doc allowed you to go. The first thing you should do is ask the surgeon's opinion.

You don't say if they are adding hardware, or just using the bone. If you are in a hard collar following surgery, you will find that getting comfortable takes some doing, as will sleeping. Being in your own bed at this point would be a plus, I would think.

And a 6 hour car ride within a week of fusion? Not unless you go in a fullsize van with a mattress in the rear for you to lay on. Of course, that's my opinion, but your neck and hip will be very unhappy. I did a trip to Colorado 3 weeks after surgery, and I can attest that was tough enough-and my hip was intact.

Good luck regardless. You would probably live through it, but I doubt you will have enough fun to justify the expenditure. Unless, of course, you can't get that money back.

THANKS nANNER, NO HARDWARE but a hard collar and no I do not think I can get my money back nor did I buy trip insurance, stupid me. I do have a full size van to travel in. Since I am going to lose my money anyway , I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Just wanted to know what all of you, that have been thru the surgery, thought. Many thanks, Cherri

Re: Surgery six days later cruise..can I do it????

    Cherri,

Are you sure you can't put off the surgery until you return? I'm 99% sure the doc won't want you on a cruise for a multitude of reasons. My doc didn't want me to even be a passenger in a car for about 2 weeks after surgery. With no hardware in the fusion the LAST thing you need is a big jolt when the car stops or, heaven forbid, gets hit. Or if you slip on deck due to rolling seas...

I hope you weren't planning to be the driver at all. You cannot turn your head with a hard collar. I realize from this board that some states allow you to drive with one, but you sure can't in Michigan. Even if I could have, I wouldn't have. Please be honest with the surgeon about the length of drive involved to get to the ship.

In your first post you say you don't want to ruin the trip for your friends. If you go and can't hardly walk (this is only a week after major surgery), can't swim or dance (absolutely a no-no), and can't drink because you will be on painkillers and other meds...is that better than staying home and taking good care of yourself? This is a time for you to take care of #1 first, and if that means letting your friends have fun in your absence, it will be the wiser course.

I'm sure they will understand. Also, if they are close to you, they will probably relax more if they don't have to feel guilty about poor Cherri sitting on the ship all alone when they hit the ports, or feel they must cut the excursions short because you won't have much endurance.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't take out insurance, as this will probably mean you would take a big loss if you can't reschedule surgery. Beg, plead, do whatever you can to postpone. If your doc is worth anything, he will not want you on that ship so quickly after surgery!

Your predicament really strikes a cord with me as I just booked my first cruise for January, after surgery June 7. Very similar symptoms, with the pain and numbness right shoulder to fingertips. For the first time in my life I took out travel insurance for the cruise. If the injury did nothing else, it sure made me aware that our health is a fragile thing and regardless of age we shouldn't assume it'll be there in 6 months (or 6 days) from now.

Enough from me. Take care, and do whatever you can to try and move that surgery date!

    Hi Cherri,Nanner and ALL,

I would like to make a suggestion if I may?
Is there another friend that could go in your place and perhaps reinburse you for your monetary loss?

I don't think you will want to travel so recently post op. I say this because even though I had hardware,i.e. plate and screws I was told to take it easy, no bending and no stretching, nor lift anything heavier than a litre of milk, and although I didn't have a collar, I was VERY aware of my every movement.

The bottom line is, if you can't reschedule surgery ask your Surgeon.

DO NOT GO!!! If something goes wrong while you are on that ship, you surgeon is very far away. I had a fainting spell 2 days after surgery while shaving. Your system must have time to return to normal after a surgery like this.

Tell your doctor you want the surgery after the trip.

I wouldnt recommend the cruise that soon after surgery. I recovered quickly but I still dont think I would have gone on a cruise a week after surgery. And you are having the bone harvested from your hip - thats an additional incision site to worry about. Call the travel agent/cruise line and explain the situation and ask if you can reschedule. I had to reschedule a flight once and USAir, which never lets you, allowed me to - with a note from my doctor.

Re: Surgery six days later cruise..can I do it????

    Hi Countrygirl:

Do not go on the trip.

I had lumbar surgery, but in any event, back surgeries (thorasic, neck, lumbar) take at LEAST 6 weeks to stabalize. That time frame is the cruicial part of the healing process. You will really need to take it easy and rest for the first 6 weeks.

As the other poster said, ask if you can have your surgery postponed for a couple of weeks until after your cruise. But I would definitely not go on the cruise being less than a week out of surgery.

    Take care.

    Sue
