Miami JTO (not just J) 6 weeks an no end in sight

Hi everyone. I recently discovered this board and have been doing a lot of reading for the past several days. However, I haven't found an answer to my question(s), so now I'm posting. I hope someone can help.

I had an anterior cervical corpectomy (and diskectomy,I guess) on September 19. (The C-5 (I think, not sure) vertebra was removed along with the disks above and below, and a plate with screws was attached.) I have been wearing a Miami JTO (collar and brace) since the surgery. I have to wear it 24/7--even when I shower, and the neurosurgeon says that I will have to wear it until fusion occurs. (She does not care about the calendar.)

I've been reading about a lot of you who seem to be wearing no collar at all, a hard collar (but no brace,
a soft collar, or even a collar with a brace, but it seems that almost all of you get some kind of reprieve now and then.

I am going crazy--it's been about six weeks now, and the light at the end of the tunnel has not even been turned on yet. Can anyone help me?

Thank you so much.

Barb

Hey Barb, your dtr sounds like mine!! Really MEAN!! I had a double Fusion with plat and scres on October 3. I am stillin brace and will be until end of this month. That amke 8 weeks total. Most peole on here are out of it in 4, alot in 2 the only ones in it for a really long time are people who use no Plates and Donor Bone. I went the whole route to cut my recovery time in half, Plate, my OWN bone, and I am still stuck in collar. I still have pain to, which really S#$%@CKS!!!!! My Dtr tole me 85% guarantee of no pain, so I am bummed. I am in my fifth week. I think My colar is the Philadelphia Torture jobber. It is foam and plastic, with a hole in the middle, real attractive. My whole neck is raw from it and I have tried everything, maxi pads, panty liners, silk scarves, bandanas. I am not sure how much different you sugery was then mine, but I know how you feel!!!! Lori

Hi Lori,

Thanks for responding. I'm looking at a minimum of three MONTHS in the darned thing! Wish it were only 8 weeks--I'd have only about a week and a half left!

You can actually view my surgery online if you type its name: anterior cervical corpectomy. This will direct you to a link with a cute little animation! Also, if you type in the name of my collar, Miami JTO, you will get a list, one of which will give you a lovely front and back picture of the godforsaken contraption! (At first I wondered why in the world the girl in the picture was smiling! Then I realized that she was probably being paid a lot of money to pose for that picture and was going to get to take the thing off after she was done. I'd smile too!)

Are you in just a collar, or a collar with a brace? (I love what you call it!)

Thanks again, Lori.

Barb

Hi Barb, i am in a Collar only , no brace so I guess I should be grateful. Ok I had a Disectomy, they took out the rupture junk and replaced it with bone from my hip and then put in a plate with 4 screws. I was in the Hospital over night, walking and all that (SLOWLY by that evening. I was asleep for about 4 hours, I had 2 levels done, I had a buldge under the rupture, so Dtr took care of that as as well, which is why is its called a double fusion. I am just so frustrated, sick to death of the Collar and not being able to do anything, go any where, its a drag, not to mention I still have pain!! Dont know what is going on. I am sick to death of it, thats why I am on here all the time, I would never make it with out this site!!! Lori

hey barb, I think I must have had similar to what you had. I looked up you case on line and it sound alot like what I had done, but of course my Dtr never really go into it with me. I did go to one of the Top Neuro Guys around here at Robert Wood Hospital in New Brnswick NJ. My Dtr did not do much talking, only tell me how bad my neck was and that he could fix it no problem he does thousands a year. After Surgery all he said was see you in 6 weeks, then Wen I called for Appointment he said 8 weeks because I fell down the steps 3 weeks Post OP and caused some inflammation. He never realy go into it with me, which I am now thinking he should have. Lori

Hi Lori,

I'm so glad I found this board. I'm so envious of anyone who is collar-only. The brace is HELL!!!! So sorry to hear that you fell down some steps--that must have been terrible!

I am sick to death of being bored. I used to complain that I didn't have enough time in the day to do all I had to and wish that time would pass more slowly. Now, the minutes just drag on and on. The days just don't move, and my neurosurgeon says that I am not allowed to do ANYTHING. It doesn't help that my left arm is still pretty useless, so I can't even read! (I can't bend my neck to put my nose in a book, and I can't use my left arm to hold a book up!)
(I'm SO glad I found this board!!!!)

I wish I could hibernate like a bear and just wake up in a couple of months!

By the way, you mentioned that our surgeries were similar; did you have an entire vertebra removed? I did--with the disks above and below.)

Hope to talk to you soon,
Barb

Re: Miami JTO (not just J) 6 weeks an no end in sight

Hi Lori,

My doc has been serious from day 1. I met her for the first time on September 17 (Tuesday), and she told me I was having surgery on September 19 (Thursday). I did not have time to think, blink, or react. The rest of Tuesday and Wednesdays were filled with activity--blood tests, presurgical testing, fitting for the brace, talking to my bosses, etc., etc.... I had absolutely no time for mental preparation. (I had a severely compressed nerve root, which had basically caused my left arm to be more or less paralyzed from the elbow up. (I went from fine to paralyzed in about two or three days.) I guess the doc was worried that the paralysis would not only get worse but that it would become permanent without surgery.) The arm is still bad, but I think it has improved a little.

My husband is going nuts. He finally realizes that he has done absolutely nothing around here and that I have been doing EVERYTHING! Now, he makes my 11-year-old daughter do a lot of things he should be doing. (But maybe he'll learn to appreciate me now!)

I think my incision is more or less horizontal, somewhat near where the Adam's apple would be if I were male, but I am not completely sure, as I have not seen it at all. I am not allowed to remove the brace/collar at all. I have a dear friend who comes over every day to change the wet pads after my shower, but I have to lie still and stare at the ceiling while she is doing the front. Then, I have to sit up and hold the front whild she does the back. I haven't seen the hip incision too well either, since I can't look down.

There's so much more I can tell you, Lori, but this post is probably too long already. Sorry about that!

It's been good getting to know you.

Barb, I think you are worse off then me so I will quit my complaining. I take my neck brace off about 5 minutes a day and am no longer bandaged. Yes, I get your drift with the Men Appreciating what we do thing. My Husband has been a busy little Beaver, finally gets to seee what we Women are really capable of. Lori

Hi Lori,

Actually, the big problem is that I do NOT know that I am halfway there. The neurosurgeon says, "The collar and brace come off when fusion occurs." She says to expect it to be AT LEAST three months! Would you believe that she has actually said, "It could be anywhere from three months to two years to never"?

She is supposedly the world's authority on my particular surgery. At first that made me feel very good. Now I'm not quite so sure.....

By the way, you are not a brat; you have just as much a right to complain as I do. True, I may be worse off, but that doesn't take away from the fact that you are uncomfortable, too.

Talk to you soon,
Barb

P.S. One of these days, I'll add a signature!
