    Posterior Foraminotomy C4-7

    Hello everyone!
I have been gone a long time from this board. I really need you guys. I apologize for being gone so long. Last Sept. I had a ACDF C5-7. I have no lordosis in my neck. I am still in a ton of pain. Left shoulder, neck, between shoulder blades, hands are numb and legs are really bothering me.
On 8/2/2002 I am having a Posterior Foraminotomy on C4-C7. Doc says it is cervical stenosis. Don't know if he will put a titanium cage in at C4-5 but do have cages at C5-7. I am not looking forward to surgery again. I had a real bad asthma attack last time. Blood oxygen level went down to 69. Then I got a fever. Doc told me to plan on staying a week this time. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif"> I really had a hard time last time. Really had to fight to come home and he sent me home with oxygen. I quit smoking for 3 months but now I am back doing it. I am trying to cut down. Also they don't think I will be going back to work ever. Have suggested that I file for disability. I assume this is because of the lack of lordosis. I am not sure. I have been out on comp since 5/31/01. Thank God I have a wonderful husband with a pretty good job. It could be worse and in the past it has been worse for me, single parent, poor as a church mouse, so I do have alot to be grateful for.
    Well thanx for listening.
    Mary N.

    Hey Mary,
I know what you went through (well sort of) i had a horrible asthma attack when I had my ACDF last week. Make sure you tell anesthesia before you get put to sleep. They can give you an albuterol treatment or two before you wake up and they take out the breathing tube. That should prevent the asthma attack. That was the scariest part of the surgery. When I woke up, there was a tube down my nose they were using for an airway. I yanked it right out. They were shocked cause they thought I was still pretty out of it. then I started wheezing. They gave me a treatmant and let me use my inhaler and then I was okay, but boy, it is no fun waking up and having breathing issues. Anyway make sure you tell the anesthesia guy so he can medicate you before they pull your breathing tube. Good luck, and post back when you get home,

    A Nice Girl

Thanx for the replies. I am grateful there are people that understand and care. It is true that alot of people think you don't have pain cause you look alright on the outside. I sure use to be one of those people but not anymore...
I do let them know I have asthma Nice Girl and thank you for the info. I do take my inhalers and they did give them to me as soon as the airway was out. I was really groggy but do remember that. I can just hope for the best and know God is watching out for me.
And its nice to know I can find friendship and understanding on this site. I have been a member of Alcoholics Anyonomous for 15 years and know what group support can mean in the life of someone living with a disease whether it is booze or spinal disorders.

    Dear RIF:
Thank you for asking about my surgery. It is 3 weeks now since it was done and I am not doing so well. The pain is overwhelming, have new pain into right arm and the pain in my right leg is sometimes unbearable. The last 3 days I have extremely bad pain on the left side of my neck, jaw, and ear. I went to primary dr. to make sure there was no ear or throat infection. There is not. Called the neuros office and they told me they are not surprised at all my symtoms and pain.
They told me second surgery sucks and it will take months to get over. Funny, they told me that I would notice an immediate difference when I came out of surgery. hmmm
I ended up staying in the hospital for two days due to the pain. Received shots of visterol/demerol and visterol/delauded one hour apart every 3 hrs.
The good news is that I had no breathing problems this time.
I am very depressed. I am trying to keep my chin up. I have been reading my bible faithfully and trying to get out to my AA meetings when I can. Everyone is being very supportive. My family is wonderful especially my husband. I could not make it through this without him.
Thank you for your support as well. It was nice to hear from someone from the boards. I didn't think anyone cared. I guess thats just where I am right now.
Feeling sorry for myself mode. It has been over two years living with this pain. I don't know how much more I can take.
    Thanx again,
    Mary
