    PT for 4 level ACDF

I had a 4 level acdf on June 10. Went to the Dr. yesterday and had differing comments on when to start PT. TAt discharge, the Dr said 3 months or September for PT. At the appt, the P.A. said whenever I want to start.

Pre op I had minimal pain or numbing. The acdf was a result of a fall and degenerative discs. Now, almost 3 weeks out. I am back at work 5 hours or so a day and feeling okay with some tingling. I am just so confused about all the differing comments on recovery. I have a lot of fatigue and incontinence. Does anyone have any thoughts about when to start PT and if the incontinence is related to the surgery?

Hello, I had 3 level ACDF in Feb/09 and started physio in June, 3 weeks seems early to be back at work, normally xrays are taken to make sure the fusion took before returning to work? Fatigue is normal and lots of rest is required for recovery, this is a major surgery. Are you wearing a neck brace? I do not believe incontinence is related to the surgery, I would advise your Dr if this is a issue. Take care,
    Bunz

Re: PT for 4 level ACDF

I followed my NS orders which included Aspen collar for 3 months. No lifting in excess of 5 pounds for the first 30 days then no more than 10 lb for the next 60. He didn't want any physio until 3 month x-ray. I'm glad I followed his direction as I'm feeling so much better. As he commented to me,"you don't want this surgery a 2nd time!"

    Good luck

Thanks for response. My surgeon is very young and aggressive and worries me a bit. I appreciate your response. I want to recovery fully and appropriately.

    Hi Milton,
I had a 3 level ACDF and posterior hardware added from C2-C5 raise my head in 10/10.
I am now totally fused from C2-T3. Your question of incontinence is interesting as Ive noticed some strange things since the surgery. I've read this is a problem that can occur. I would talk to the doctor for sure about that. Good luck.
