    Neck Stenosis facts needed asap!!

I am 48 yrs old. For 19 months I have been dehabilitated by neck pain, tension headpain, and lightheadedness. I have these symptoms every minute of the day, morning noon and night. Through all of my trials and tribulations with specialists over this time, the only thing that has been discovered is that I have neck stenosis and neck arthritis. Can this stenosis cause the lightheadedness and tension head pain that I have? I am scheduled to see a pain mgt doc and revisit my neck spec. to work on this. Any info would be appreciated.

I suppose you have gotten an MRI of your cervical spine? What did it say?

Headaches COULD be the result of pain and tension in your neck. As for lightheadedness, I couldn't say. Hopefully, someone else here can.

I have to say I've never heard of a "neck specialist". Is he an orthopedist? What does he have to say about your MRI results?

you are correct. orthopedic spine and neck spec. MRI does reveal stenosis, but doc has never really explained to me what that means and what it can cause. going to pain man. spec. on 9-15 and back to ortho on 9-18 for further consultation. thanks.

The word "stenosis" simply means narrowing and is used in many places in the body such as aortic valve stenosis or cervical spine stenosis.

Stenosis of the cervical spine can be caused by a number of problems. You can be born with a congenitally narrow canal or the bone within the canal can start to thicken and cause stenosis. The most common cause is bone spurs due to osteoarthritis alone or in combination with a bulging disk. They can form along the edge of the disk or the bone and then get pushed further into the canal space. A herniated disk can cause stenosis without bone spurs as well.

Depending on what is causing it, there is a new surgery that both Webdozer and I have had for stenosis called a laminoplasty that rebuilds the bone over the back of the canal, doubling the room for the spinal cord without fusing the vertebrae together. Might be what you need down the road.

I had the headaches and neck pain but no light headedness.

Hi, yes this can cause light headedness. I was very light headed after whiplash in a car accident and the tests only showed severe muscle strain.
Once I went to physical therapy to have my muscles worked on and the tension and knots worked out of them, the light headedness went away.
About the stenosis, I have severe stenosis, and only get lightheaded when my neck or shoulder muscles are stiff and ache, I then have to go back to therapy again. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input. What type of therapy do you do. I heard that deep massage rubs in the back of neck and base of skull works well. I had therapy that involved neck stretching, but that seemed to agrivate things more.

Any exercises will aggravate it more as that's what caused it in the first place. Deep massage works but can be painfull, I have had that. The treatment I have now is called counter strain. It does not hurt, and is not stretching or exercises. The therapist just puts me in a position that releases the tension in the muscles. I actually thought it wouldn't work, but it works great. I only go for a few sessions and I am done. I have severe stenosis in my neck, caused by 2 large bone spurs, so I cannot be ( adjusted at all ) so this treatment is very gentle and works quickly. I have had this problem for years, and know that stretching and exercise only makes it worse. Good luck to you. I hope ou can find a therapist that specializes in counter strain.

Hi again, I forgot to let you know, massage does work well also, but it can be short term, mine is. I also wanted to ask if your doctor mentioned surgery. I go to the mayo clinic next month, and have appts. with a neuro surgeon, the spine clinic, and x-rays. I believe I will have to have neck surgery. My hands are very weak and I drop things alot, I cannot move my head like I should be able to, then there's my legs, they have gotten very heavy at times, weak at others, and I walk with a cane as I have one knee that gave out alot. The treatment course is physical therapy to address your symptoms, which it should take care of the light headedness, headaches etc. After a about 6 sessions or even sooner, you should notice considerable improvement. If not, or you have more symptoms come on, surgery is usually considered.

    Hi Intruder!

I am fairly new here also (at least new to posting)

Just wanted to let you know that I have stenosis also and I have a mild
dizziness all the time. I also have severe pain and burning and a feeling
like my head isn't sitting correctly on my neck.
I sometimes get a pulling sensation in the back of my head right where the skull meets the neck.

I have to be careful to not turn my head too suddenly as this can bring on a
pretty intense dizziness. Happily though...it only lasts a few seconds.

So sorry you are having to go through this. It's not fun!

    take care.
